The Question:
In ancient Rome, important thoroughfares like the Via Appia were laid with flagstones using limestone to fill in the cracks. But unscrupulous road builders used Paraffin Wax instead of limestone to save on costs. In the summer the paraffin wax would melt and chariots would stick to them. What word came into English language from this?
The answer:
The word is 'sincere'. Honest road builders who still used limestone used to advertise with the words 'sans cere' meaning 'without wax'.
