The Question:
Mohammed Hasham
was a businessman whose family was in the business of rice exports. He
lost his business when the government nationalised the rice industry in
1941. Undettered he plunged into the Edible Oil business and started Western
India Vegetable Products. He recouped his business in a short time. During
the partition of India in 1947, Mohammed Ali Jinnah asked him to come to
Pakistan and offered him a place in his ministry. But Hasham turned down
the offer and opted to stay back in India. His company was a moderate success
and at the time of his death in 1967 had two reknowned Vanaspati Oil brands
- Sunflower and Camel. His son who was studying in the USA at that time
left his studies midway and came back to take over the reins of the company.
Today his company is one of India's most well known enterprises and he
is believed to be the richest person in India. How do we know this company
today?
The answer:
WIPRO the Indian Infotech giant, of course (Western India vegetable PROducts). The son is Azim Hasham Premji believed to be the richest Indian in the world. (Net worth of US $ 2.9 Billion - Forbes Billionaires List 1999)
