Pitch Black

 1999; U.S.A. Films

directed by David Twohy

written by Jim Wheat, Ken Wheat, David Twohy

cast: Vin Diesel (as Richard B. Riddick), Radha Mitchell, Cole Hauser, Keith David (I), Lewis Fitz-Gerald, Claudia Black, Rhiana Griffith, John Moore (VIII), Simon Burke

produced by Tom Engelman

synopsis:  Perhaps one of the best movies sci-fi films of the Millenium, Pitch Black tells the story of a group of space travellers whose emergency crash landing on an alien planet dooms them into becoming the inhabiting creatures' next meal. An eclipse plunges the planet into a lasting darkness, placing the marooned travellers at the mercy of fate as they must battle against hordes of nocturnal, carnivorous creatures with a taste for human blood.

I thought Pitch Black was one of the most interesting sci-fi films I had seen in a long while.  I think Vin's character, Riddick, had a lot to do with that fact. Riddick's development from someone we fear to someone we sympathize with is amazing (and I could go on about that but I won't).  I also applaud the camera techniques used (though I'm no film techie, I did notice the originality in the film's cinematographical effects).
