ABOUT GPAC
Greyhound Pets of Atlantic Canada (GPAC)
is a Canadian registered non-profit society located in Lake Echo, Nova
Scotia, CANADA. We are a 100% volunteer-driven organization and as
of January 2001, have placed over 540 greyhounds into loving homes
throughout Atlantic Canada.
From humble beginnings, Greyhound Pets of
Atlantic Canada (GPAC) was founded in the early 1990's by Jeanette Reynolds.
Initially, dogs were brought back from the United Sates a few at a time in a
car. This gradually progressed to the renting of a van and volunteers
travelling south to bring the dogs back to loving homes.
Today, GPAC has an arrangement almost
exclusively with Shoreline Star Greyhound Park's Adoption Program called
"Pups Without Partners" to bring dogs into Atlantic Canada. Dogs are
transported to Lake Echo, Nova Scotia in a greyhound hauler, with up to thirty
dogs at least five times a year. This arrangement allows us to transport
the dogs in larger loads and more economically. All dogs are transported
on the condition that they will be moved immediately into pre-approved homes.
Our interview and screening process allows
GPAC to maintain an extremely high success rate of placing dogs into new homes
the very first time ... over 97%! This cannot be compromised.
We also have an excellent support network
built up through a multitude of experience with our numerous greyhound owners.
We have owners within the group that range anywhere from one up to six
greyhounds in their home.
The long-term goal of GPAC is to establish
an on-site kennel that would contain vetting services for the dogs. This would
allow the society to place dogs continually throughout the year as opposed to
just a few times per year and would allow new owners to receive their dogs upon
approval.
