Relatives are baffled at the death of their loved one, James Nelson, who was a prisoner in the Brickdam lockups, Georgetown, and whose lifeless body was removed yesterday morning.

The body of Nelson, called “Jimmy”, 47, of 7 Church Street, Stanleytown, West Bank Demerara, bore a gaping wound at the back of the head and his face was swollen when the corpse was removed from the lockups yesterday morning by undertakers from Lyken Funeral Parlour.

The ex-soldier is believed to have been imprisoned on Monday following a row at the Ministry of Home Affairs where he had worked on the construction of a fence.

His relatives only learnt of his demise when they received a telephone call from a family member.

Nelson’s sister, Ann Nelson, told the Guyana Chronicle that when she and a group of relatives arrived at the Brickdam Police Station they were prevented from entering the compound when they tried to enquire about what had happened.

She said that sometime after the body was placed in a hearse and whisked off to the mortuary, after a rank told them that they would have to identify the body.

She admitted that Nelson is mentally challenged and is the father of two, and whenever he got sick they would take care of him.

Ms. Ann Nelson is of the opinion that her sibling took ill and engaged in a quarrel with someone at the Ministry of Home Affairs when the police were summoned and he was arrested.

Nelson’s reputed wife, Gloria Nelson, said that they received a telephone call about 06:00 a.m yesterday morning and headed to the Brickdam Police Station to verify the information they had received but was surprised to find out he was dead.

She added that the police later asked her to give a statement, but she received little information regarding her husband’s death.
