Dear Editor,
I wish to comment on
the pitiful excuses that Commis-sioner Felix used to explain
his failure to curb the crime situation.

We all know about the
gang in Buxton which the police seem incapable of dealing
with. However on the West Demerara one
man, Bovell is able to rob, rape and kill whenever
he feels like it.

We are also seeing more
murders going unsolved. It seems that the criminals have
every confidence that nothing would be done to bring them to
justice.
The commissioner spoke
about salaries. However not so long ago the police salaries
were far worse than they are today but their crime fighting
spirit was far greater. The problem therefore cannot only be
salaries.

As far as
transportation and communications are concerned, the police
are better equipped than ever in living memory, yet, their
crime fighting ability has decreased.

While this is going on
very experienced crime fighters are either forced to leave
the force or are made useless by the Commissioner. In these
times, why are Merai, Smith and
others not on the road taking on the bandits?
Is it that the
Commissioner and his close associates are of the view that
they can do a better job without them? If so show us! If not
let that squad be regrouped to deal with the problem.
Mr. Commissioner your
excuses are feeble. If you can't do the job you should
resign.
Yours faithfully,
Rudolph
