On Caricom day 2006, a number of persons
started a peaceful picketing excerise at the 1763
monument, this was later expanded to the Caricom
headquarters, Suriname Embassy, United States
Embassy. This excerise was to highlight to the
authorities and the people that criminal acts were
being commited by the United States, Trinidad and
Suriname upon the people of Guyana.
The rendition policy that was developed by
the CIA to have persons who the United States
deemed as terrorist unlawfully extradited by means
of kidnapping and taken to countries where torture
is a mere spec in everyday life. The use of the
word "rendition" within law to means
"handing over", This method of torture
was used to extract information from these
suspected terrorist and yet still leave the United
States blameless if any trace of torture was
leaked to the general public. By this I mean they
would have declared their innocence to the fact.
Many of these acts of rendition were done in the
wee hours of the morning where persons were
spirited away on planes that moved in the cover of
darkness. This policy of Rendition is condemned by
the European countries and should be also by
member states of Caricom. The United States then
came up with what is known as extraordinary
rendition as was applied in the case of Roger
Khan, where they took him away in the dawning of a
new day all because somebody said he conspired to
import cocaine into the United States. While
extraordinary rendition was originally developed
by the CIA, the Justice Department also do
renditions. Initially, the procedure was applied
primarily to individuals for whom there were
outstanding arrest warrants. After the 9/11
attacks the program appears to have been expanded
and some believe it now encompasses individuals
for whom there are but vague suspicions. In the
case of Roger Khan, the indictment against him is
so vague that one has to read between the lines to
find out what are the charges laid against him.
Legal scholar L. Ali Khan, a professor of law at
Washburn University School of Law in Kansas, makes
the following distinctions between rendition,
extradition, and deportation: "More than
anything else, the law (or lawlessness) around
renditions is most intriguing. Rendered men cannot
be lawfully extradited because they have committed
no crime in the state to which they are rendered.
Sometimes, the friendly government has no clue
about the identity or activities of the person
before he is rendered. Sometimes, the rendered man
is not even a national of the receiving state.
Hence the contrast between extradition and
rendition is vivid. Extradition is an open
procedure under which a fugitive is lawfully sent
to a requesting state where he has committed a
serious crime. Rendition is a covert operation
under which even an innocent person may be
forcibly transferred to a state where he has
committed no crime. It is like a bully dispatching
a helpless prey to another bully in another
town." They violated his every right by
venturing into this area, a court hearing was to
be heard the Friday and the Suriname authorities
no doubt failed and blatantly assisted the United
States in carrying out this act that violated this
mans rights in every sense. Everyone should have
his say when it comes to the law of the land. The
law says we as individuals have a right to
challenge anything that is set before us and Roger
Khan never had his day in this regard. Are we as
Guyanese and Caricom nationals going to allow the
United States who are the real terrorist the
opportunity of kidnapping our citizens. Time and
time again they go into other countries and leave
nothing but death and destruction when they leave
and then they have the balls to tell you that
they’re trying to make the world a safer place.
A safer place for who? For America is the answer.
It is time the leaders of Caricom open their
mouths and let the United States know that they
can’t go about bullying the world over. Is the
green dollar going to be the object that we are
going to worship all the days of our lives. It is
time that we turn to other developed nations for
the support that we so badly need and forget about
the free money the United States is offering at a
price tag that is later affixed. Suriname and
Trinidad and Tobago will no doubt benefit sometime
at the expense of the kidnapping of Roger Khan.
These countries will be lauded with praise and aid
because they turned over Roger Khan because the
United States said he conspired to traffic in
narcotics. Shame on you Suriname and Trinidad and
Tobago, you should have let due process run it’s
course. Are you really members of Caricom or are
you watch dogs for the United States. Wake up
Guyana, smell the stench, we are already treated
like dogs in some Caricom states. What more proof
is needed for us to see who our true friends are.
As we strive to become one in the Caribbean, we
will see that members from our own household are
the true enemies of the people. Today the
picketing excerise was staged at Caricom
headquarters. The pickets were as follows;-
1. Roger Khan victim of extraordianry
rendition.
2. Caricom must condemn renditions. Caricom
must condemn Suriname's action.
3. CSME- cash strapped multinational
economy sold Roger Khan.
4. CARICOM--- Covertly Allowing Renditions
Involving Citizens of Member states.
5. Free Rodrigues Belfield Roberts.
6. Caricom where is your voice renditions
are unlawful Amoung the picketers were family
members of the 3 men who are still in the suriname
jails, it was visible that some of them were
emotional and some wanted to know if the Guyana
government had revoked the nationality of the 3
men who are born Guyanese. They felt that the
Government should be assisting to find out what is
the situation concerning the men. To date Caricom
nor the president of Guyana has made any
statements at to the extraordinary rendition that
was used to take Roger Khan to the United States.
