questioning taxi driver
who picked up alleged killer

Popular manager of Big Gill
Fashions, Mark
Gill, was found hacked to death
in his luxurious four-bedroom home at New Road
, Vreed-en-Hoop early yesterday morning. The
police is of the belief that he was slain by a
close associate who is now on the run.
The 31-year-old businessman, clad only in
his underwear, was found sprawled on his
bedroom floor shortly after 08:30 hrs by his
maid.
Police said the corpse bore at least five
gaping chops, including a three-inch cut to
the neck, two to the left arm and one to the
right arm.
A sister of the slain businessman said that
his jewellery as well as cash and jewellery
from his parent's bedroom were missing.
There was no sign of forced entry to the
premises, and this and other leads have led
detectives to conclude that the killer was a
close associate.
Kaieteur News understands that detectives
have detained a taxi driver, who allegedly
picked up a youth who visited Gill's home late
Thursday night.
However, the suspect was still at large
yesterday evening.
Gill lived at the New Road residence with
his parents, who are at present overseas.
He was the manager of Big Gill Fashions in
Water Street .
Detectives spent several hours scouring the
murder scene before calling a hearse to remove
the body.
Several employees of Big Gill Fashions
gathered outside the premises until the body
was taken away.
Dian Balram, the slain man's sister, said
that she last saw her brother alive at around
18:50 hrs on Thursday night, when she gave him
a lift home. She dropped him off at his gate,
so she had no idea whether anyone else was in
the house.
Mrs. Balram said that she had planned to
drop him to work next day, so she called his
home but got no answer.
She then came around to his house, since
she had expected to see him waiting outside
for her, but left after seeing no sign of her
brother.
According to the sister, she then contacted
a maid who had the keys to the property and
asked her to check to see if her brother was
asleep.
She said that on arriving at the home, the
maid found the gate and front door unlocked.
The woman then entered Gill's home and
found him dead.
Mrs. Balram said that her brother's corpse
was on the floor.
One of his hands was clutching the grill of
his bedroom door.
She said that his bedroom and that of her
parents had been ransacked.
According to the sister, the maid found a
lighter and a decorative candle in the bottom
flat.
The woman said that her brother kept three
dogs and said that the animals would have
attacked any stranger entering the premises.
Dian Balram described her brother as a
fun-loving person who had many friends. She
said that he had no enemies that she knew of.
“Up to now we are in shock,” she said.
“None of us can really believe
that this has happened.”
