Woman found dead on seawall had received phone call - relative

Patricia Charles

The mother of three who was found dead on the Kitty seawall on Saturday afternoon had left her home in Meadow Brook after receiving a telephone call on Friday night.

Unsolved murder

A sister told Stabroek News yesterday that Patricia Charles, 26, was in bed when she received the call at 8 pm and she told the person that she would be ready by nine to go out.

The sister said the cell phone, a handbag, and jewellery Charles left the house with have not been recovered. A post mortem examination is scheduled for Wednesday to determine the cause of death. There is apparently no clear evidence of foul play.

Contacted yesterday the Police Public Relations Department said the investigation was continuing and the police are asking anyone with information to come forward.

Charles's sister questioned why the police had not yet used the phone company to find out who it was that had called the home on Friday night. She said after not seeing her sister get home by 4 am on Saturday, she did try unsuccessfully several times to contact Charles on the cell phone.

It wasn't until Saturday evening that a brother, who went to see the body in a funeral home after reading in the newspapers of the corpse found on the seawall, told the sister what had happened. "And I deh walking telling everybody my sister missing. But I was waiting till nine o'clock to report it since the police say is till 24 hours after," the sister said.

Charles had been working as a short wave radio operator in West Demerara for persons who wanted to make contact with interior locations.

She died leaving three children ages 11, eight, and seven years old.
