Pensioner “commits suicide”
Investigators are currently taking statements from relatives
of an 83-year-old man who allegedly committed suicide at Chateau
Margot, East Coast Demerara yesterday. Dead is Joseph Rodrigues,
who was allegedly shot himself in the mouth.

According to information, around 11:00hrs yesterday, Angelica
Rodrigues, the man’s 62-year-old daughter returned home and
entered her kitchen and started washing “some wares” when
she suddenly felt a “lash” on her foot.
When she turned around, she said that she saw her father with a
bat in his hands. The two had a scuffle and she shouted to her
17-year-old granddaughter. The young
girl came from the upper flat of the building and spoke to her
grandfather.
Sources close to the investigation told Kaieteur News that the
17-year-old told her great-grandfather to desist from behaving
in that way. According to reports the man left and went upstairs
to his room and came out with his gun.
The elderly man who was a licensed firearm holder came out from
his room and fired a shot at his daughter but missed. Fearing
for her life, the 62-year-old woman ran downstairs and secured
herself in a room with her granddaughter.
The 83-year-old man then went downstairs and reportedly broke
the windows from the room his daughter was hiding in, but was
told by his great-granddaughter that his daughter was not in the
room.
The source added that after there was complete silence, the
daughter thought her father had left the house. However minutes
later the woman said she heard a gunshot around the step and
within another five minutes they heard another shot. The woman
said after hearing the shots they heard the elderly man cry out.
The police were then summoned and the man was found in the
living room of his upper-flat apartment with his face completely
destroyed.
The police in a press statement said that they were
investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of
pensioner and licenced firearm holder Joseph Rodrigues.
According to the police the incident happened some time after
11:55hrs yesterday.
