housewife sets herself on fire By Clifford Stanley A twenty-one-year-old West Berbice housewife and mother of two was yesterday in a critical condition at the Georgetown Public Hospital after she reportedly set herself on fire at her home at Blairmont No.1 Settlement yesterday. Samantha Kalamadeen is said to have set herself ablaze on the bottom floor of the James Bond Liquor Restaurant at Blairmont Stelling Road, where she lived with her reputed husband and two children aged three years, and three months Reliable sources reported that the woman had been overheard having an altercation with a male relative just minutes before. There were also reports of sounds of her being beaten.The sources said it was some minutes after the argument and suspected beating that she poured kerosene over her body and clothing and lit herself afire. “I hear screams. I rush outside to see what was happening. I see Samantha on the ground with her body and clothing on fire and screaming with pain, a male relative said.”Samantha just bun sheself”. The woman was rushed to the Fort Wellington Hospital and then transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital. Doctors there drew the attention of her relatives to two gashes on her head and to injuries to her left shoulder which did not appear to have been caused by burns. The Police at Blairmont West Bank Berbice are investigating. At press time yesterday her condition remained critical.
