Police on the East Bank of
Demerara are investigating the
circumstances surrounding the death
of a 54 year-old Craig woman who was
found with her throat slit in her
home.
According to reports, the woman, 54
year-old Sita Reddy of 139 Second
Street Craig was found lying in a
pool of blood in the bottom flat of
her two storey house. The discovery
was made by the woman’s husband,
Norman Reddy around 13:30 hours when
he returned home from running
errands. The woman’s son-in-law,
Ryan Harimal, who spoke with this
publication, related that the
woman’s husband arrived home and
started calling for her but got no
response.
“He tell we that after he calling
and calling fuh she, he go in the
house and search upstairs and then
come back downstairs and is when he
turn on the light he find she lying
down in a corner with blood.”
Harimal added that the husband
immediately informed the police and
neighbours. Further checks around
the house revealed that two bedrooms
in the house were completely
ransacked.
There are reports that the woman’s
husband was earlier in the day
stopped by police at the Providence
Police Station.
“The police stop he and ask he fuh
fitness and the other papers fuh the
car and he couldn’t find it so he
call home and tell he wife to search
fuh it…but like he find it in the
car and when he call back fuh tell
she (his wife) that he find it in
the car, the phone keep ringing
out,” Harimal said.
Up to late yesterday, relatives of
the dead woman could not say what
exactly was missing from the house
but from all indications robbery was
the motive. The woman’s relatives
speculated that the woman, who sells
plucked chicken, may have recognized
her attackers and may have put up a
vicious fight. This publication was
told that in March of last year, the
home was invaded by thieves.
Residents
outside of Sita Reddy’s home
waiting to get a glimpse of her
body after news of the
brutal
murder and robbery spread in the
Craig community.
“Ever since that incident, she
always tell people that if anybody
come back in she house she gon put
up a fight and she mussy fight back
with them that’s why they kill
she.”
It is believed that the woman was
killed by three men who pretended to
be customers wanting to purchase
chicken. One resident of the area
said three young men were seen
calling out for the woman and were
seen entering the yard. No one could
recall seeing any activities there
after that.
Meanwhile, relatives as well as
other residents of the area are
calling on the police to carry out a
thorough investigation into the
incident since there has been a
noticeable upsurge of crime in that
community.
Residents say only last week a male
resident from the area was attacked
and robbed.
This incident, being the first
reported murder in the village for
the year, has sent shock waves
throughout the community. When this
publication arrived at the scene,
scores of residents had gathered
outside of the woman’s home and
were in a state of shock.
“Even if they come and rob
somebody, take whatever they want
and go… they aint got to kill,”
one resident lamented. Even as
the woman’s remains were being
taken away by undertakers of the
Lyken funeral home, residents
cringed as a trail of blood followed
the stretcher on which she was being
carried out on. That in itself told
the story of the injury which the
woman sustained.
