Police intensifies crime fighting efforts
Gun and ammunition found during roadblock


Members of the Tactical Services Unit (TSU) of the Guyana Police Force swooped down yesterday on the section of Mandela Avenue, aback of the Botanical Gardens and conducted a successful operation today.

During the exercise, the police arrested a man for being in possession of an unlicensed firearm. The man, 38 year old Alphonso Skepmire of Alberttown, was found with a 9mm Taurus pistol and 23 matching rounds, inclusive of an extra magazine.

Skepmire was at the time travelling in a white Toyota Carina, PHH 5578. Both Skepmire and the driver of the vehicle have been taken into police custody.

The ranks, numbering 32 and led by an Assistant Superintendent of the TSU, stopped several vehicles, including mini buses and motor cycles. Even persons on foot were stopped and they and their bags searched. 

One mini bus, two SUV’s and at least two motor cycles were impounded for various traffic violations, ranging from being unlicensed to driving without fitness. The vehicles were impounded pending further investigations.

Meanwhile, a senior officer of the Police Force disclosed that over the last 48 hours, various patrols conducted across the country have unearthed about nine unlicensed firearms and a number of persons have been arrested.

Earlier yesterday, a routine patrol in the city stopped a suspect on foot and a revolver was found on him.

The ongoing campaign forms part of the national response of the Police to the crime situation in the country.

Several similar exercises will be executed soon.
