Essequibo sea wall collapses

MOVING OUT: victims move out from their flood-hit homes at Stewartville, West Coast Demerara.
ANOTHER section of the fragile Devonshire sea defence on the Essequibo coast has crumbled under severe high tides.

When the Guyana Chronicle visited the area yesterday, some 80 feet of concrete structure had already been ripped away by powerful waves.

The entire sea defence structure at Devonshire Castle is under severe strain because high waves are washing over the badly eroded sea dam.

Already, several main drainage canals in Devonshire Castle and Walton Hall rice growing areas are filled with several inches of water from the Atlantic Ocean.

SHELTER: Stewartville victims at the shelter at the Uitvlugt Community Centre last night.
Residents in the area told the Guyana Chronicle that they are very fearful because the excessive high tides will wash away the fragile earthen sea dam embankment and flood the areas if emergency work is not done quickly to protect the embankment.

Region Two (Pomeroon/Supenaam) Chairman, Mr. Alli Baksh was informed about the breach and dispatched the engineers attached to the Anna Regina Sea Defence office to the site.

The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Public Works was also informed about the breach by Region Two Chairman.
