Subject: Ohio Judges course
If you are receiving this it is because you either judged last year, expressed interest in judging this year, or are targeted to be drafted into judging based on your past experience with gymnastics. This year's National course for Ohio is tentatively scheduled for November 2-3. It is listed as a two-day course because we'd like to run a Judge's Cup meet in conjunction with it on the second day. This is the first year Ohio has attempted anything like this. The idea is to get some live, on-the-floor experience with the rules early in the season and while they are still fresh in your mind from the course. The meet format will be low-key, no awards, with some real-time feedback provided to gymnasts when an interesting judging point arises. Experienced judges will head an event with newer judges adding to the panel to check their scores against the head judge to make sure they're on track. Judges may rotate to experience several events. While the meet should be a good learning experience and intro to the season for the gymnasts, the focus will be on preparing the judges. Hocking Valley agreed to host the event this past spring at the state meeting. The plan was to charge a nominal entry fee ($15), all of which would go towards a newly formed Ohio Judges Association. These proceeds would be used to fund second judges at selected meets for additional training as well as subsidizing start-up costs for new judges. The details still need refined but the money stays in state and is used to advance the quality and quantity of Ohio judges. We had several new judges last year who did an excellent job. We need to continue to get new people involved so we can support the many meets Ohio hosts each year. Because a two day course/meet will require an overnight stay for most people, the initial expenditure of the funds will be to cover the cost of hotel rooms - i.e. it shouldn't cost you any more than last year(other than meals). The goal is 100% reimbursement but it will be somewhat dependent on the number of judges and gymnasts participating so I can not guarantee this. We will attempt to get a block of rooms at a group rate rather than reimburse people individually. What I would like is a rough head count by way of response to this email, as to who can participate in the course/meet on this date. It is important to the success of the event that we get enough judges. If you can attend on this date please let me know. Also, if you can recruit other gymnastics community members to participate, please invite them and forward me their names, especially soon-to-be or recent graduates. While we will still run some JO-only courses this year, it is preferred that you participate at this national course if possible. Fees are the same and both certifications will be offered (if you do not pass the National test you can still get your JO card).Feel free to contact me with any questions. Please respond whether you can participate or not. I look forward to hearing from you.
Thanks--Tom
