THE POWER OF THE SITH
A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far, away...
Five years have passed and danger once again has
engulfed the Republic. For though the Sith were
defeated at Sirla, they were not destroyed. After
their loss, Darth Belian, Darth Rahn and Lady
J’Brar have gone into hiding--securing the power
base within their order.
Now, dark and dangerous machinations are stirring
in the galaxy. Many rumors of bribery, unrest and
political corruption are spreading. The Republic is
once again entering a period of decay. Sensing this,
the Senate has created the Inquisitor’s Office and
charged it with the persecution of anyone suspected
of abuse of power. People now fear the Inquisitors
more than those they hunt.
In the midst of all this, a new rumor has surfaced
from parts unknown. One that, if true, could bring
the Republic ever so closer to its downfall. A new
Sith lord has appeared--and he has vowed to destroy
the Republic and the Jedi. All factions are taking
steps to ensure that their end is not near....
***********************************************************************
The dark craft began its final approach into the planet of Dunalg. A deserted planet that was unknown save for a few early attempts at colonizing the wildness of its nature. An orange and amber glow filled the planet’s atmosphere as sunset was imminently approaching. The craft descended towards a fortress that was located within one of the tallest mountains. Large forests hid from view anything that occurred on the ground--but the ship’s crew was certain to keep tabs on what was happening. They noticed the anti-aircraft batteries tracking them--sure to shoot them down if they deviated from their flight path. The pilots were not going to do anything like that. They wanted to live.
As the craft began to touch down on a landing platform, a darkly robed figure approached the ship. It watched the ship finally land and shut off its engines. Within moments, the ship’s ramp was lowered and an equally dressed figure emerged from the ship’s bowels. This one too moved with a purpose. The first one intercepted it as it walked. “The lords have been waiting for you, Sha-wan,” it said.
“I know,” replied Sha-wan. “However, my journey was dangerous, Nekki. The entire galaxy, it seems, is on alert.”
“You need not explain yourself to me, Sha-wan,” replied Nekki. “We are brothers in the Sith.”
“True,” said Sha-wan, “but the lords will want an explanation.” That said, the two dark figures went inside the palace. After passing through a couple of checkpoints, they stood in front of a large door, which was guarded by two large menacing figures. Nekki moved in front and opened his hand. A small device in his palm was activated and it revealed a few holographic figures. The guards made no move, but when the door opened, they took a step to let the new visitors inside. Sha-wan and Nekki entered and sensed the door closing behind them--leaving them in a completely dark room.
Suddenly, one light was ignited in front of them. Standing in front of this light, was an even more menacing figure. His looks were those of an angel, but his heart was eternally black. The figure looked up at the two Sith knights, who had bowed before him as soon as his presence was revealed. He smiled. Now, thought this man, they fear only me. Darth Belian.
“Sha-wan Merkat,” spoke Belian in a quiet tone, “you are late.”
“Forgive me, milord,” replied Sha-wan, “but the Republic’s guards were closely watching all the space lanes. It took some bribery and some exterminations to ensure my return.”
Belian seemed to take this into account before continuing, “And what is your report?”
“My lord,” spoke Sha-wan, “the rumors are true. There is a new Sith lord in the galaxy.”
Another light appeared to Belian’s left and a voice--feminine this time--was heard before the figure could be identified. “And how do you know this?” Sha-wan immediately recognized the voice as belonging to Lady Adea J’Brar.
“Because, milady,” replied Sha-wan, “I met with him personally.”
“Have you any proof?” pressed on J’Brar. Rather than answer her, the knight took a hand into his robes and produced a commtech chip.
“This is a sample of what he is promising,” spoke Sha-wan, eyes focused on Adea J’Brar. “It is new technology that promises to completely destroy all past modes of communication and handling of information. It uses the finest ores mined from Tenebe, Sirla and Allas Kine to produce a signal more powerful and flexible than has been ever been able to be created.”
“This ‘new technology,’ are there any flaws with it?” spoke a third voice--more metallic this time. Sha-wan turned towards the voice as he recognized it as belonging to Darth Kodean Mae Rahn. Standing on Belian’s right, the digital orbs of the Sith lord bore no conscience or emotion. They were cold, calculating and evil.
“No, milord,” replied Sha-wan. “As far as I can tell, this commtech chip is used in the top secret Holocron systems. They have been rumored to be used only by the Jedi, the Supreme Chancellor and the Inquisitor’s Office.”
“Does he say where he got it?” asked Adea.
“No,” replied Sha-wan, “he was like a stone when it came to his secrets. But he did relay a message. ‘I am Darth Masterna. I can be a great ally or a great enemy. This chip is just a trinket as far as I’m concerned. If we ally ourselves, we can become a great power. Choose wisely.’”
After a moment of silence, Belian spoke, “Clearly, this Darth Masterna is powerful. If he can take the technology away from under the Jedi’s and the Inquisitors’ noses then he is well-connected too. You have done well Sha-wan Merkat. Leave what you have brought with Nekki. We will take what you have reported into deliberation.”
Sha-wan bowed low and said, “I obey the Dark Side.” The dark lords’ lighting went out--leaving the room in pitch blackness. Turning, he gave the commtech chip to Nekki and left the dark room.

As far as Jann Duvey was concerned, there was nothing quite like flying a starship. More than that, there was nothing like flying a fighter. While being a Jedi was the great adventure of his life, this was a base and simple pleasure--one that was fulfilling like few others. Turning towards the set of arcs and targets, he began to take measure of his test. Here there was no ambiguity. There were no dark and dangerous secrets at these controls; no treachery and no problems while he remained inside. Here, inside this cockpit, he could cut loose and allow himself the only reprieve from the burdens that his position as a Jedi Knight carried. He placed the first target within the ship’s locks and prepared to nose-dive the fighter. Simple bliss was rare in the universe--he should enjoy this.
“Remember, Duvey,” came the voice through his comm system, “the point of this test is to ensure you still have the qualifications to retain your fighter pilot status. If last year’s test are any indication, this should be relatively easy for you. Though be forewarned, we have added new surprises to keep you on your toes.”
“Roger that,” replied Jann, nodding in the direction the voice came. He almost laughed at the reaction. The tester was miles away--in a military starport down on Coruscant--but he still sounded as if he was next to him. “Tell me when.”
“When,” said the officer. On hearing that word, Jann dived straight for his target--a gleaming bullseye that was set on a floating asteroid. His face became intent and his mind focused. He saw the bullseye see-sawing towards and away from him. Catching the rhythm of the target, he shot his blast cannons at the target just as it started to move away. Turning away from the asteroid, he gave himself the luxury of looking back. The laser shots hit the bullseye dead on as it was reaching its return arc. A smile and he was on to the next one. This one was placed between three asteroids that were bouncing violently around. Jann began to turn in, having figured out the best path a moment before the fighter’s computers had provided it. Suddenly, a communication cut into his train of thought. “Duvey, break off,” said the testing officer. “You have someone who needs to talk to you.”
Jann did as was told, but not before launching a pair of proton torpedoes at the target. From this far, chances were slim that they would hit the target, but he knew better. “All right, what is it?” As he finished, the two torpedoes hit the bullseye and blew the asteroid out of the sky.
A second voice cut in--a Wookie’s roar. Jann smiled, immediately recognizing it as his partner’s, Krokukkon. A few quiet growls quickly informed the human of an immediate call from the Jedi Council. This turned Jann serious. If the full council was calling them, then a mission was imminent. Or they had decided to kick them out of the order.
“I’ll guess we’ll finish this test some other time,” said the officer. “For the record, you’re going with an U. You’re going to need to finish a fully administered test to retain your status. Hope whatever this intrusion is will be worth it.”
“I hope so too,” said Jann. The transmission ended and the Jedi was once again alone with the ship. As he descended back into Coruscant, he began to spin the ship. He loved this like nothing else.
************************************************************************
Walking into the main Jedi towers in Coruscant, Krokukkon felt his heart skip and his fur ruffle one more time. Many were the time he had walked through these halls, but he always felt a sense of elation whenever he came here. There was a sense of history and purpose in here--something that made him feel truly proud. To be sure, he had not come here until he had been taken as Padawan by Master Ulric Tronos. Till then, his time had been spent at the Academy on Yavin IV. But, in their wisdom, the Jedi leaders had long recognized that they needed to be close to the center of power--to best temper ill judgments and serve the Republic in times of crisis. That theory had long since been proven correct.
His partner, Jann, walked beside him and broke their reverie by asking the obvious. “Any idea why the Council is calling us to appear before them?” The Wookie’s single roar said no. He had wondered the same thing. After all, they had just recently returned from a very successful mission to Togahbi. They had prevented a mass riot and military coup. The trouble that had followed them early in their careers seemed to be in their past. Krokukkon roared to Jann that the Council did as it wished. The best idea now was to relax and not worry about it.
“Right,” replied Jann in a sarcastic tone. If they weren’t worried about it, they wouldn’t be asking each other what they already knew. Krokukkon turned to his partner and saw his face full of the same determination he had. His long braids had long been abandoned and instead he now wore his hair long--with just two braids in the back falling over his shoulders. After a trip up an elevator, they reached the anteroom to the Council’s chambers. Here they found another Jedi--a girl. She wore red robes, instead of the usual Jedi brown. Brown, wavy hair fell on sharp features and soft blue eyes. Turning to one another, Jann made a comment to Krokukkon, then turned to greet this Jedi.
“Hi,” said Jann in his smoothest tone. “My name’s Jann Duvey and my friend here--the tall and woolly one--wants to know if you are next to see the Council. Cause we are very important and if you want to meet them, we can get you in.”
The blue eyes turned to meet Jann’s. “Yes, I am waiting,” replied the Jedi, in a serious tone. “Tell me, Jann Duvey, is your date over there coming to ask the Council’s permission to marry you? Cause if so, I’d like to convince him not to.”
Jann turned to see his partner laugh--which, in Wookie, came out as low gruff. He returned his gaze to the Jedi and said, “Let me guess. Inquisitor’s Office, right? Of course I’m right. The red robe is a dead giveaway. So, hunted any children yet? Maimed any mothers? Sold your soul yet or are you waiting for the blue robes instead.”
The Jedi stood straight up and looked Jann fiercely in his eyes. “Don’t mess with me, Jann Duvey or--”
“Or I’ll have to finish it,” said a serious and determinate voice. Both young Jedi turned to see Master Ebbo Zommo. A Zabrak, the Jedi Master was revered in the Jedi Academy by all his former pupils. Then, the Council had asked him to take a position here for a short term. The term had been made longer a few years ago, but it was rumored that he wanted to return to the Academy, where he felt he’d do the most good.
Upon seeing Master Zommo, the female Jedi went stiff and bowed. “I’m sorry, Master. I won’t let it happen again.”
“Serania,” said Master Zommo, “you still have to learn patience. Not everyone will be your equal.”
“That doesn’t sound too hard,” said Jann. Master Zommo looked at the knight, while Serania turned white and spun to face him.
“Are you done, Duvey?” asked Zommo. “The Council wishes to see the three of you now.” He walked back into the council room. Serania quickly followed, while Jann and Krokukkon waited a moment and walked slowly.
“This doesn’t look good,” said Jann in a low tone to his partner. Krokukkon forced himself not to laugh. They entered the chambers and stood at the center of the circle--Krokukkon at the center, Serania to his right and Jann to his left. They faced their old master--Ulric Tronos. As head of the Council, he had much authority and leadership. But many now said that he rarely saw anyone outside the Council--and then only on serious matters. He kept himself out of the light and never spoke to anyone unless needed. Some were dismissing it as illness, while others blamed him of being power hungry and unwilling to share with the other members of the Council. Whatever the case, no one spoke this to the Master’s face.
“Jann Duvey, Krokukkon, Serania Burtell,” spoke Master Ulric in a very serious and determined voice. There was power behind that voice, thought Jann. “You have been called before the Council because we have a very important mission for you. As you well know, rumors of corruption at various levels of the government are rampant throughout the Republic. We have recently uncovered some very substantive leads in one particular world that we wish you to investigate.”
“With all due respect, Master,” spoke Serania, “is that not the job of the Inquisitor’s Office? The Jedi are supposed to step aside in such matters.” Keeping her eyes on Ulric prevented Serania from noticing Jann’s reaction. He rolled his eyes and wished he could have been free to speak his mind there. Instead, he watched Ulric smile at the young woman. The Jedi Master pointed at her red robes and asked, “Those robes you wear, are they not the color of the Inquisitor’s Office?”
“Yes, they are,” said Serania in a serious tone. “While I am a Jedi, I wear the red robes of the Inquisitor agents to defer to their command. So I see no reason for us to interfere with their functions. If we have leads, we should turn them over to the Inquisitor’s Office promptly.” Now Ulric watched Jann and Krokukkon both roll up their eyes. They understood that if Ulric and the Council were involved in this, then something was amiss.
“You see,” replied Master Ulric, “the rumors that we have heard say that the government leaks are reporting to the Sith.”
Serania’s eyes widened. “Di-did you say the Sith?”
“Yes,” said Ulric in a somewhat smug tone. “Our rumors indicate that someone high on the chain of command in the world of Allas Kine is giving information to the Sith lords. Who he is and what he has divulged is unknown. That is why the Inquisitors were more than willing to let us handle it--with you on board the case, of course. You three are to go to Allas Kine, investigate any and all leads and report back on what you find.”
“Did you say Allas Kine?” asked Jann, now serious after hearing that the Sith were involved.
“Yes,” answered Ulric. “Allas Kine--one of the main mining operations in the entire galaxy. That is the second reason why the Inquisitors wanted us to handle it immediately...and quietly.”
“I assume we are to leave at once?” asked Jann.
“As soon as you leave this meeting,” replied Ulric. “Your gear and all important equipment has been placed aboard the Star Flame. Once on Allas Kine, you will make contact with the military governor, Denuri Kaffa. He will act as your liaison and give you all the help he can--but, as always, you are to walk alone.”
“Therefore, be careful,” admonished Master Zommo. “If the Sith are really involved, then there is much danger.”
“Yes, Master,” replied Serania.
“Then,” said Ulric with a wave of his hand, “may the Force be with you.”
***********************************************************************
Like the city, Coruscant main starport is a massive building of skyscrapers and towers. Landing platforms abounded throughout the city for private transliners, but the public transports and the military ships entered and left the planet through the main starport building. It was here that the Jedi’s main transports were also housed--among them the Star Flame.
Walking towards their ship, Jann couldn’t help but feel the sense of awkwardness that had marked their short trip to the starport. Though he knew that Serania was a Jedi, a part of him did not like her. Not because of her looks--she was extremely pretty--or her abilities--as a knight, she was surely his equal. It had to do with whom she worked for. All the Jedi believed that their work mattered because it was led by the Force in ways they’d never fully understand. That was why, if some Jedi prevented some war on the far reaches of the Republic, he was as much a hero as one who lived his life on Coruscant guarding Senators and their aides. The duties may have been different, but the pledge and vow to guard the Republic and all its citizens united them in the present with those of the past and the future. What each one did would matter to all.
But Serania Burtell worked not for the Jedi. She was part of a detachment that had, to be truthful, been lent to the Republic’s new Inquisitor’s Office. As such, she did not wear the usual Jedi uniform, but instead wore a set of red robes with the Jedi garments underneath. That had been done to ease the discomfort of the Inquisitors and assure them that the Jedi were united in their cause. What it had done was drive a small wedge of resentment between the Jedi and their outcast brethren--who assumed that their new positions meant they were more special than those not selected. Some of those Jedi wondered whether they would be welcomed back into the Order without some backlash or if they should just leave and join the Inquisitors. Jann did not like any of this nor did his partner. They had discussed it since its inception and knew that this had the markings of a major problem waiting to erupt.
“So you trained under Master Zommo?” asked Jann to Serania, trying to break the uncomfortable ice.
“Yes,” replied Serania. “When he was asked to join the Council for his first short term, he selected me as his Padawan. We went to many places and it was an incredible time. He is the best teacher I’ve ever known--perhaps the best the Jedi have ever had.”
“Well, I don’t know about that,” replied Jann, thinking wistfully on his own adventures. “I’ve known a few that could give Master Zommo a run for his money. Two come immediately to mind.”
Serania was a bit flabbergasted and couldn’t comprehend her companions’ opposition. “Have you actually trained under Master Zommo?”
“Yes, actually,” said Jann as he turned to face her. “Both me and Krokukkon were students of his at the Jedi Academy. He is a great fighter, but had no patience with us. I think we were the only students whom he ever had to threaten to get us to take him seriously.” Hearing his partner’s laugh, Jann could barely hold his own. “That’s how we came to be banded, Krokukkon and I. We made so much trouble that no one could stand us. We often had to train ourselves after hours to ensure we wouldn’t fall behind. One time, we set off the training room’s automated defense system and it blasted everything--including some of the sewer lines below. They had to clean up for three months to get the smell out.” Now the snickering turned to outright laughter by both Jedi.
Serania stood there, mouth agape at both her companions. “I can’t believe they ever made knights out of the two of you. Who would be crazy enough to take you guys on?” With that said, she boarded the ship. Jann and Krokukkon laughed, arms over shoulders, as they boarded the ship. At the top of the ship’s ramp stood a droid close to six feet tall. It was gleaming chrome in color and had four arms.
“Greetings, Master Jann,” said the robot. “All the ships’ preparations are as you asked. I have also taken the liberty to prep adequate quarters for our guest.”
“Thanks, Zee-Nine,” replied Jann as he looked around his ship. Everything seemed ready. He went to the ship’s controls and ran final checks before liftoff.
“Nice ship. How did you ever come by it?” asked Serania as she looked at the entire ship.
“It was a...gift for me. From the same people that gave me Zee,” replied Jann. “The Jedi took it and revamped it. Now, this baby makes .8 past light speed.”
“I’m impressed,” said Serania as she buckled herself. Looking at her two new partners, her question still rang. How did Jann Duvey and Krokukkon ever become Jedi Knights? Who had been crazy enough to take them as Padawans and make Knights out of them? The Star Flame lifted from the platform and began its departure. Krokukkon roared twice. Next stop, Allas Kine.
The Star Flame left Coruscant’s atmosphere and within a few moments jumped into hyperspace.
***********************************************************************
Watching the departure of the Star Flame was a darkly robed figure. The figure’s face was entirely covered by the dark shroud, but the lips were somewhat visible--enough to see the smile that took over these lips as the ship left. This was Darth Masterna. And he was pleased. Things were going exactly as planned. Soon, he would be free of all this, he thought. For now, though, he had other matters to attend to. He turned around and returned down a secret passageway. He had a call to make.
************************************************************************
Within the chambers of the Sith Triumvirate, stood the three dark lords. Each one was presenting their individual reports to the other two. They stood about, watching a holoscreen that showed various figures.
“As you can see,” said Lady Adea to her comrades, “all our ore transports have been under fierce attack. I suggest we take a new route to avoid the roving tribes that are now attacking us.”
“Is that your idea of a plan?” rebuffed Darth Rahn. “To avoid these ticks! We should destroy all that oppose us--without mercy or second thought.”
“Really?” said J’Brar, facing Darth Rahn. “Do you remember that the shipyards we took over from those crime bosses are not yet up to full speed? If we attempted anything now, we could stand to lose our stature and base of power.”
Belian, who until this moment had remained quiet, lifted a hand. “I do see your point, Lady J’Brar. However, I do have to agree with Lord Rahn. Any and all attack from these tribes must be destroyed and done swiftly. That we shall do it while not at full power will increase our position even further.”
“I see no reason to lose fighters we don’t have and pilots we have yet to train to just prove we can deal with nothings like this,” replied Adea. “They are small and insignificant. If they can attack us, surely stronger bands may think about it too.” She would have continued further, but Nekki entered the chambers and knelt before them. Of all their knights, Nekki was the only one who was allowed free entrance into their chambers. Belian turned and asked, “What is it?”
“Milord,” said Nekki. “We have a transmission coming over private channels. It is Darth Masterna.”
The three Sith lords looked at one another--both anticipation and apprehension present. They had planned to contact this ‘Darth Masterna’ at a time and place of their choosing. If he knew their secret location, they wondered what else could he know. Regaining their composure, they stood over their lighted platforms and instructed Nekki to patch the communiqué through. A large blue hologram appeared of a figure dressed in the dark robes of the Sith order. His face was impossible to see. All three of the Sith lords remembered their earliest training and the visage of Darth Sidious and Emperor Palpatine. Their former master, Darth Vassoran, had forced them to learn all they could about past Sith lords and know where they had failed in their mission to destroy the Jedi. That was the same visage that now greeted them--except that they could clearly determine that this person was younger and stronger that Sidious had ever been. So this person either wanted to show himself more powerful than he was or show them that he knew of Sith lore. “Greetings, Darth Masterna,” said Belian. “We did not expect you to get in direct contact with us this soon.”
“My apologies,” replied the dark figure. “I did not mean to startle you. However, I thought it was proper time for me to introduce. Obviously, you are debating serious affairs. Should I call back when you have destroyed the pathetic tribes that are bothering your ships?”
The three Sith lords looked at one another--confused at how he had known and resentful of his tone. They looked back to Masterna and it was Belian who spoke. “No, of course not. That was just a minor affair. Nothing to concern yourself with.”
“On the contrary,” replied Masterna, “there is much to be concerned with there. If these pirates keep harassing your ore shipments, then the Sith will suffer a lack of proper ships and weapons with which to fight. Nothing to worry? There is plenty to worry about there. But,” he paused before continuing, “I am getting riled over nothing. One of the reasons for which I have called is to inform you that earlier today, forces loyal to me have destroyed the bases of these bands.”
“All of them?” nearly screamed Adea. “All destroyed?”
“Yes, Lady Adea,” replied Masterna in a matter-of-fact tone. “All of them. Consider it a sign of my good will towards your cause. And a sign of things to come.”
Rahn looked towards Belian. His comrade shared his look. They both looked again towards the hologram and this time Rahn spoke. “What is it you want, Lord Masterna?”
“An alliance with you,” answered Masterna. “I, like you, know full well the checkered history the Sith has had when there are more than two of us. After that initial folly, Darth Bane bade us continue as he had reshaped the Sith. But this way was also proven wrong. The Jedi are too strong for there to be only two Sith lords to destroy them. We need a viable army. This was Darth Vassoran’s goal, but he was caught in his megalomania and paid his price. You, I believe, have the right idea, but need more power and resources than even Vassoran could muster. I have those.”
“And in return you’d like undying loyalty to your rule over the Sith?” asked Rahn with a snort.
“None of that, milord,” replied Masterna. “I’ll agree to sharing leadership of the Sith with all three of you. I shall bring my resources and my power and you shall bring the Sith and your armies. Together, we will unite and create one Sith Order--no more bickering or infighting. No more disloyalty or secret hatred. We will save all our rage for the Jedi and all they have constructed.”
“How can we know we can trust you?” asked Belian, sudden greed in his eyes.
“The same way I know I can trust you, Lord Belian,” replied Masterna with a smug tone. “However, if a gesture of good will could be shown, I will know I can trust you. Just like, after my signs of good have shown, you can be trust me.”
Belian looked at the hologram and asked, “Do you require anything?” The blue hologram of Masterna smiled and replied, “There is one thing. I am held here in Coruscant against my wish. I will require proper passage to escape from their claws.”
“Held there?” asked Rahn. “If you are so strong and well-connected, why not just break yourself out?”
“Because,” replied Masterna, “if I could do so, I would have no need for you.” This turned the three Sith lords grim. “That is the price you will have to pay for me and my power. Free me from Coruscant.”
“Tell us when and where and it shall be done,” said Belian.
“I shall send you this information through more quiet channels,” said Masterna. “Till then, my lords.” The hologram disappeared.
It was when the hologram disappeared that Adea J’Brar finally spoke. “I do not like him.”
Darths Belian and Rahn turned to face their comrade. Adea continued, “I vote against his joining us. He will lead us to downfall.”
“We shall see, Lady J’Brar,” replied Darth Belian. “Patience is needed.” With that their meeting was adjourned. Adea left the Sith chambers, while Belian and Rahn remained.
“Do you see it?” asked Rahn.
“Yes,” replied Belian. “The proper steps will have to be taken. And soon.”

The Star Flame came out of hyperspace and began to descend into the system of Allas. It was an amazing occurrence that had yielded these planets the massive and plentiful ores that the people used as the basis of their economy. They weren’t rich in one ore, but had an abundance of many. Precious metals, irons, silicane, rare crystals used in communication and defense systems--they all existed within these planets. The capital world was Allas Sind. The Jedi, however, were headed to Allas Kine--the richest of the seven planets and base for the mining of ores that went directly into use for the Republic.
Krokukkon was at the pilot’s controls with their companion, Serania, at his side. The droid, Zee, was behind them, playing the part of navigator, communications officer, repair crew and cabin boy. It was about him that Serania and the Wookie were speaking--with the droid serving as an interpretor.
“Wait, you mean to tell me that these things just drop in Jann’s lap?” asked Serania incredulously.
Krokukkon roared an affirmative reply, followed by various gruffs. The Wookie said that they just appeared at various times in his life and career. When he had made Padawan, the droid had mysteriously appeared at his quarters. Jann, having no use for the droid at the time, used him more as a live-in maid. Later, when Jann passed the trials and was made a Knight, the ship had appeared at the starport. Its docking bay was also registered to him. The Jedi had taken the ship--a state of the art AstroShip vessel--and remodeled various things. So the Flame--already an impressive ship--was made even more impressive. And they were all gifts for Jann Duvey.
“So where did they come from?” pressed Serania. Krokukkon roared his ignorance on the subject. He had asked Jann a few times, but they had all been answered with the same unknowingly smile he provided.
“I hope no one is trying to buy his influence,” said Serania just as the doors opened and Jann entered.
“Who’s influence?” asked the Jedi.
“No, um,” began to retort Serania. “It’s just that...I don’t know if we should trust these local governors. Chances are that their influence can be easily bought.”
Jann looked at her and smiled. “Glad to know you’re the optimistic one of the group,” he said sarcastically. “We’ll keep that in mind. Ready, Krokukkon?”
The Wookie roared his consent and Jann took the pilot’s seat. They began to descend into the greenish-brown atmosphere of Allas Kine. Massive cargo ships sat in orbit, while shuttles carried cargo, crew and passengers from and to the planet. As the dusty clouds began to part and reveal the surface, the traffic became less intense. However, the skies were dominated by the various immense power plants, factories and mining facilities. There was no doubt about what this planet’s economy was based on. The Star Flame began to pass small villages and cities built around the various mining operations. The Jedi were ordered to land at one of the main cities. Within moments, the Jedi’s ship landed at Allas Kine’s main starport--a great building set in the outskirts of the power plants and mines. The Jedi began to debark and were greeted by two robots.
“Greetings, good sires,” said one. “Welcome to Allas Kine. We hope you enjoy your stay here and that your fortune is good. Please go to customs if you wish to claim luggage or head straight for the identification terminals if you--”
“Great,” said Jann, “a public starport protocol droid. One that talks a lot too.” The young man moved away and began to walk. Krokukkon waited a moment and followed his partner. Serania took the rear, muttering to herself, “I don’t know. He seems to have a lot of personality.”
The droids looked back at the leaving Jedi and the greeter said, “How rude!” His partner simply beeped an electronic laugh.
************************************************************************
Within moments of clearing their identification with starport security, the three Jedi secured a transport for the capitol building. The taxi snaked through the city’s streets--shouting people out of the way. After a ten minute ride, they arrived at the capitol building--the home of the provincial government of Allas Kine. As a sign of good will, the Jedi entered the building--an extremely ornamented one--designed to show off the fortunes and beauty of the people of Allas Kine. They finally reached a checkpoint and asked to see Governor Denuri Kaffa. The guards waited a few moments before leading them to an empty conference room. The Jedi were left by themselves for a few moments.
“Do you truly think the Sith are here? In Allas Kine?” asked Serania.
“I don’t know,” replied Jann. “It could be simply neighborhood thugs or small-time gangsters, trying to impress people by conjuring up old images.” After a brief pause, the Jedi said, “Then again...”
He let the thought trail away. Within moments, a blue, bug-eyed alien stepped into the room. He had with him another protocol droid and several secretaries. He made a gesture that told the Jedi to take a seat. Once done, he sat down at the center of the round conference table and began to speak in an alien tongue. The protocol droid waited a few moments before he translated his master’s speech. “My master, the Honorable Governor of the Province of Kine in the System of Allas, welcomes you. He wishes you to know that any and all aid that he can provide is at your beck and call--his resources are at your disposal.”
“Tell him, thank you,” replied Jann. “We have been sent by the Senate on a most secret of missions and will require secrecy until our investigation is complete.”
“Very well,” replied the droid. “My master says that you should start out by the shipping docks. This is where the majority of the reports come from. Shipments here and there are lost, while some dock workers have disappeared.”
“We’ll get on it,” replied Serania. The three Jedi rose after Kaffa and watched the alien leave. The Jedi stepped out and, after a few moments, were outside of the capitol building.
“You guys go on ahead to the docks,” said Serania. “I have a few hunches and leads I want to investigate first.”
“You sure?” asked Jann, a serious tone behind his voice.
“Don’t worry,” replied Serania. “I’m just going to check if Krokukkon has been checked for fleas.” With that, the Jedi turned and left Jann laughing and his Wookie partner fuming.

The communication port was flipped on and, after a few moments, turned from blue to pitch-black.
“What is it?” asked a harsh voice.
“The Jedi are here!” replied the caller. “They are on their way to the docks.”
“We will deal with them!” said the voice at the other end.

Jann and Krokukkon got to the Republic shipping docks after a few hours. After taking what Jann thought was the surest route, they had been forced to go three miles back to where they started. No longer amused, both friends had called upon their skills and followed the path guided by the Force. They had made it to the docks by closing time. The foreman--a big alien similar to Kaffa--had been less than pleasant or warm with the Jedi. However, when he tried calling his boss, he received a terse and sharp reply to let the Jedi search the docks. He threw the spare keys to the Wookie and left saying he wouldn’t stick around here all night for them to be done.
The two Knights began to walk around the docks--checking packages and invoices. They found mostly ores being shipped to places like Corellia, Bespin and Togahbi shipyards, as well as Tetan Di weapons plants and Volror transports. The only thing that caught their attention were the sizes of the amounts. Tons, hundreds of tons, thousands of tons, all being shipped here and there. They had no idea how to begin studying all of this data--so they didn’t. They continued their investigation and came to a set of doors that were twice as thick as any blast doors ever seen. The sign said dangerous ores.
“Should we investigate?” asked Jann. Krokukkon roared his reply. Yes.
“All right,” said Jann in a defeatist tone. He pulled out the keys the foreman had given Krokukkon and inserted the right one into the electronic locks. The doors unlocked and opened in a circular motion--large metal jaws separating. Once revealed, the Jedi were shocked to see two menacing dark figures, wearing black robes, standing right in their way. They removed their robes and revealed two human figures. Jann and Krokukkon knew immediately what they were. Sith Knights.
In unison, the two Sith Knights removed their lightsabers, ignited red blades and assumed a stance that left no doubt as to their intentions. Krokukkon looked at Jann and smiled. They also removed their brown cloaks and stood before the Sith. Krokukkon removed his lightsaber first and ignited its blue blade. The two Sith Knights turned to Jann--who had no lightsaber hanging from his belt. They began to advance towards them at first. However, Jann made a move towards the back of his belt and brought up a lightstaff. Immediately, he lit both ends and assumed his stance. Now, the Sith knights were no longer so sure. Seizing the moment, the Jedi launched upon their opponents and took the offensive.
Pairing off against the Sith knight directly in front of them, Jann and Krokukkon separated and attacked. Krokukkon used his clear size and strength advantage to pound on the Sith Knight. His blue blade seemed to ricochet off the Sith’s red blade before coming down again with twice as much force. Pinned down this way, the Sith knight had no way of mounting an attack against his larger opponent. He was forced into defensive positions with no chance at attacking the Wookie.
Meanwhile, the other Sith knight was having problems with penetrating Jann’s defensive arc. Fighting a Jedi armed with a lightsaber was one thing--but a lightstaff was a very rare weapon and not used by the Jedi at all. How this Jedi had come by it and how he had become so proficient in its use were questions the Sith knight wanted answers to. But Jann was not about to give him any answers. So the Sith knight tried everything to stop his rival’s attack. One red blade blocked the other’s up high, but before he could retaliate, Jann spun sideways and brought the opposite blade towards the Sith’s side. At the last moment, the Sith knight was able to block the Jedi’s attack. Trying to use the other’s attack as a base, the Sith knight rolled with Jann’s left strike and brought his lightsaber up on Jann’s head. The Jedi, however, was not fooled by the move and blocked the Sith’s blade with one of the lightstaff’s ends. Immediately, Jann imitated his opponent and used the Sith knight’s attack to bring the other end of the lightstaff up and under his opponent. As his blade came immediately upon the Sith, he backflipped out of the way and reassumed his offensive stance. Jann stopped and smiled. He was good.
Krokukkon, wary of his partner, kept an eye out for Jann. Even now, years after they had been made Jedi, Jann had the tendency of enjoying the fight. He roared his disapproval of Jann’s smile. This gave his attacker the opportunity to launch an offensive. He dove straight for the Wookie, but changed his approach in mid-flight. This allowed him to kick Krokukkon straight in the chest. The Jedi Wookie roared in surprise and was sent reeling back and into cargo loaders. The Sith knight landed on his feet and somersaulted towards his stunned foe. He came down bearing hard on Krokukkon and would have succeeded in delivering his killing blow if Krokukkon had not blocked the blade with his own.
Jann shouted to his partner, but Krokukkon waived him off. Returning to his own fight, Jann was quickly realizing that their fight was slipping away. Facing off the now attacking Sith knight, Jann did a backflip of his own and landed on top of cargo crates various feet above the floor. Pressing his advantage, the Sith knight was quick to follow. They exchanged parries back and forth and kept moving up. Then Jann tried a dangerous move. He let his lightstaff fall to his side and flipped downward. The Sith, seeing an opening, did his own jump upward and attempted to cut Jann in two. Here’s where the lightstaff proved its effectiveness. Whereas one-bladed lightsabers would have required to be brought up to perform any move, Jann’s twin-bladed saber allowed him to attack with his back exposed. The Sith did not see this. As he passed by Jann, the Sith knight tried to bring his saber down, but one of the blades from the staff cut through him. Jann landed and turned to watch the two halves of the Sith knight fall away.
His Sith knight desposed of, Jann turned to help his partner. But Krokukkon was already on his feet and fending off the other Sith knight. Seeing Jann still alive and his partner dead, the Sith knight realized the danger he was suddenly facing. He tried to turn and flee, but Jann moved to block the entrance. The Sith turned and decided his best approach would be to run the Wookie through. So he ran towards him and faked a leap before trying to slide between Krokukkon’s legs. The Wookie moved to let the Sith slide by, but before he could run, Krokukkon spun and brought the blue saber down on the Sith knight. He connected on the Sith’s head and watched the body fall down.
The Jedi partners looked at one another. They hadn’t faced Sith knights since their mission to Sirla. What they were doing here was, therefore, important. Jann and Krokukkon walked towards one another--trying to calm themselves down from the excitement. Suddenly, they sensed something. Jann turned and ignited one end of the lightstaff. It was blocked by a green blade. From behind it, he recognized Serania’s face.
“Whoa!” yelled Serania. “Calm down!”
“Serania,” said Jann. “What are you doing here?”
“I’m here with you,” stated Serania, matter-of-factly, “Remember? What happened to you two guys?”
Jann brought his blade down and hit the button. “We were attacked by Sith knights. One’s laying over there. The other one’s down a ways over there.” Taking a pause, he continued, “Anyway, what did you dicover?”
“Well,” began Serania, “I discovered that some small parts of the biggest shipments were dissapearing. Here, come with me.” She led them back to the offices, where she pulled out the inventories they had discarded earlier. “Here, take a look at this. A shipment of deluthium, approximately 350 tons, sent to Tetan Di for weapons. Well, look at this.” She pulled out her holoprojector and showed a copy of an invoice. “Luno Weapons received the shipment at Tetan Di--340 tons. A small enough difference to pass inspection-.”
“But add enough of these and you get one hell of a tap,” finished Jann. He looked up to his partner. They didn’t like this. Krokukkon roared the question they had both thought of simultaneously. “Who is able to clear this?” repeated Jann.
“I checked. Luno Weapons is responsible for a part of the Republic’s weapons. So, this isn’t any small clerk. I checked and three people can do this. One, the Supreme Chancellor--and that’s in case of wars. Two, Luno Weapons President, but--.”
“But he’d have no reason to mine his own company into the ground,” said Jann. “I’m guessing person three is none other than-.”
“You got it,” said Serania. “Governor Denuri Kaffa.”
