Description
Each Ferret has its own distinct
personality. They are a member of the Weasel family and are strictly
carnivorous. A ferret always seems to be wanting to be somewhere he
isn't. They regulate their own feeding schedule. Due to a very low bacteria
count in their stomachs, food passes through very quickly (about three hours)
so they have to eat about every six hours. This necessitates hoarding of food..
You will notice a ferret will always take morsels
of food up into its loft for use later. These stashes should be cleaned
out occasionally as they will decay and rot if left unattended.
A ferret's natural food is rabbits and rats, but they have to be trained to
kill them.
Ferrets are cuddlers and will sleep curled up with each other for most
of the day. They are very curious by nature and love to play and
sometimes bite, although this is merely play for them, a novice should be
aware of their extremely active nature. Their play bites are not dangerous
and do not break the skin. Nevertheless one must be cautious around a strange or newly purchased ferret. It may have been abused, and in that situation, it could have developed some nasty habits. I have been bitten nasty by unfamiliar ferrets, but never by ones I have raised or had for any length of time. Ferrets love to run for short distances
so be ready to keep them from dangerous areas.
Ferrets make wonderful mothers
