Cairbre Riada, king of Dalriada in Ireland, was descended from Conor II, High King of Ireland and Sarad, daughter of Conn of the Hundred Battles. Irish history tells us that Cairbre led his followers from Munster (the southernmost part of Ireland) to Antrim (at the extreme north-east coast of Ireland). This family is traditionally considered to be of Érainn descent. Fergus, Angus, and Lorne (sons of Erc), the traditional founders of Scottish Dalriada, were descended per Irish and Scottish history from Cairbre.
The Érainn were the second of the Celtic groups to come to Ireland. They arrived from mainland Europe between 500 and 100 B.C., and established their La Tène culture throughout the island as a military aristocracy possessing superior iron weapons technology. They were generally known as the Ulaid in the North, and as the Erainn in the South, although all the tribes of this ethnic group were ultimately known as Erainn, later shortened to Erin. Descendants of the Dalriadic royal house in Scottish Argyle lie in the group below.
