St William's on Long Point

Historic Saint William's Church - Raquette Lake, New York

Built in 1890 by William West Durant, Saint William's on Long Point, is a rare surviving example of a small rural church by the famous New York architect Josiah Cleveland Cady (1837-1919). Set in a woodland setting, this building features tall conical-roofed, half-towers with finials, which are blended into the main volume of the building by a continuous roofline. Made entirely of wood shingles, the building is distinguished by the subtle surface pattern, which sweeps without interruption and with no articulation or detailing at corners or joints. The "Look" has been described as "an architecture in which the frame is totally concealed and walls and roof are perceived as thin skin shaped by the enclosed space." Saint William's is a splendid example of one of the most important architectural styles developed in America -The "Shingle Style".

Over the past several years there have been two main goals for Saint William's on Long Point: to get the Church back in good condition; and to use it in a way that will cover our basic operating expenses. We have achieved the goal of operating self-sufficiency and are now able to turn our attention back to preservation.

The exterior is done.  Now work has started on the inside.
