THE DISTILLERY DISTRICT - TORONTO

On April 06,2004 while my brother was visiting from Pennsylvania, we decided to take the GO train into Toronto for the day and visit the Historic Distillery District. The Distillery District officially opened in 2003 and is a pedestrian only village. Gooderham and Worts distillery was founded in 1832 and became the largest distillary in the British Empire It ceased operations in 1990.

The main reason for the visit to the Distillery was to visit the Mill Street Brewery, and of course, free samples!


Notice the black doors on the photo on the right. They were in the Movie Chicago. Over 800 movies were filmed in the Distillery District over the past decade.

Steve, one of the founders of Mill Street Brewerey, gave us a great tour. After some samples at the bar, we took home a few six packs. I enjoyed the original organic lager, and for coffee lovers, Mill Street makes a Coffee Porter.

The highlight of the day was the wonderful lunch we had the the Pure Spirits Oyster House & Grill. The lunch menu had a great choice for every appetite, and my favorite LOTS OF SEAFOOD! The food was excellent and the atmosphere was fantastic. Busy but not noisy. Theres nothing more I can't stand than enjoying a nice meal with friends and family and being drowned out with loud music. If I want loud music I will go to a nightclub!


My husband would of lost his appetite watching his Mom suck down the oysters as he hates seafood! My brother and I enjoyed sharing a huge bowl of Peel & Eat Shrimp, which was excellent! We all opted for the Mill Street Tank house Ale Battered Halibut & Chips which by this time we were pretty well filled up from our appetizers.

The journey to the restrooms was a unique experience. Wandering past an old safe and what looked like an old furnace made you wonder how many people passed though here over the years gone by.


Other things on the menu include, NY Strip, Fried Calamari, Beef Burger with Portobello mushroom & peameal bacon, Grilled Chicken breast, soup & salads and much more. I can't wait till my next visit to Pure Spirits. And Give Pure Spirits a 5 star rating!!!
The Galleries


I'm not much of an art fan except for the Wyeth Family, being that I grew up near the Chadds Ford, PA area. But I did find the exhibits at the Distillery District fascinating. The first three photos below, are of the Jamali exhibits located in The Blue Dot Gallery. Many famous people who have Jamali collections include: Oprah Winfrey, Elton John, Kelsey Grammar, Tiger Woods, and Emeril Legasse.

I also enjoyed viewing the glass works in another gallery which was beautiful.


The Shops

There are many shops located thought the Distillery District, including one chocolate shop, Soma Chocolates, which the aroma will make you yearning to buy some, even for non-chocolate lovers like me
