SEASON SUMMARY:
This was an incredible season, in which the fans were robbed of what should
have been a memorable World Series. The Reps were clearly the league's best
team, but the Season 3 Stickpins were clearly the best offensive team in HBWRL
history. The fans were denied the chance to see these two square off in a "Clash
of the Titans" type of series because (1) the Stickpins' pitching staff was
pathetic, with a team ERA of over 5.00; and (2) the Maids played respectably,
especially against the Stickpins. The result was that both teams finished 9-9.
While the Pythagorean Theory of Baseball tells us that the Stickpins should
have finished 10-8, and the Maids 8-10, baseball is not played on paper (or
even in a computer). It is played in ballparks, and in the ballparks, the Maids
took 4 of 6 from the Stickpins on the season, giving them the tiebreaker advantage
and a berth in the Series. Predictably, the Reps spanked the Maids in four straight.
But we will always remember the Season 3 Stickpins, the only team ever to hit
over .400; Richie Allen, the only player ever to win the HBWRL triple crown;
and the Series That Never Was.
