Commercial Thickening Agents

The choking that comes from dysphagia that develops in the later stages of many neuro-logical disease and other dementia is one of the most frightening and difficult symptoms of the disease to deal with. It is frightening not only for the patient, but also for the caregiver involved. Frequently this is the condition that results in the home caregiver giving up and transferring the patient to a Nursing Home.

Foods that have been thickened help swallowing impaired patients by converting the food or liquid to a consistency ranging from a heavy syrup to mashed potato or pudding. The food becomes dense and cohesive, which eliminates the problem of thin pureed food or drink running down the throat and into the lungs.  See   5 Levels Difficulty In Swallowing

Important: Before using any food thickeners, please consult with your physician and/or speech pathologist. A swallowing study may be warranted, covered by Medicare, and identify the appropriate thickener.  Below are a few of the products offered commercially.  Typically, you can ask your local Pharmacist about the commercial Food Thickners they can purchase for you by the case.  Buying by the case is usually cheaper then buying one can at a time.

Elemental Formulas
Neocate  -- Made by SHS and imported into the US.  Very expensive but the first one of its kind.  They also make flavor packets and orange-flavored juice boxes.  The boxes have been shown to have minute contaminant in them but they do work for some patients.
Elecare  -- The US made equivalent of Neocate.  Made by Ross Labs
Vivonex (not intended for allergic disease but does work for some)  Made by Novartis.
Disclaimer:  The webmaster does not endorse any of these products personally.  We did use ThickIt for several years in helping my daughter with her swallowing problems but just about any commercial thickner recommended by your physician should work.
