(OPENING THEME)
Tohru: (Talking out loud to herself) It's so sunny! (Talking to her mother's picture) Well, mother, wish me luck again today! I'll be back! (talking like she is talking to the viewer as she walks to school) Hi there! I'm Honda Tohru. In May of this year...I lost my mother, who rasied me all by herself, in a traffice accident. After that incident...I've come to live secretly in a tent. It's definetely not too comfortable...but that's alright! Since one of my mottos is..."Never quit under any circumstaces!" (Sees a house) Ara? (walks up to the house's veranda) Mom, I found something...a house is here! It seems to be peaceful...(sees some stones painted in the chinese zodiac)Aha! Kawaii! These are figurines of the 12 animals from the Chinese Zodiac.
Some Guy: Ara? (Tohru looks up to see a guy reading the newspaper) There's a girl around here?
Tohru: (Backs up) Waii! S...sorry! I just barged in without asking.
Guy: Oh it's ok, help yourself. I don't mind since these are just drying in the sun. But...they're not very fun to look at from a younge person's perspective, I assume?
Tohru: Not really...They're very cute.
Guy: I see...I'm gald you feel that way, since I am fond of these myself.
Tohru: (looking at the stones) But as expected, there's no cat.
Guy: Cat? Ara...oh, you mean the kitten from the folktale of the Chinese Zodiac?
Tohru: Yes. My mom told me all about it.
(FLASHBACK)
Tohru's Mom: Long, long ago...Kami-sama told all hte animals,...I invite all of you to a party tomorrow. And on no account, be late. When the mischeivouse mouse heard that...he told a lie to his neighbour, the cat, the the meeting was to take place the day after tomorrow. The next day, the mouse rode on the ox's back and arrived in front of the meeting place... After that, the ox, the tiger and so forth...had a fun time there until morning...except for the cat that was fooled. Why are you crying Tohru?
Little Tohru: That's so sad! I feel so sorry for the cat! I know what I want to do...instead of a dog, I want to become a cat!
(END FLASHBACK SCENE)
Guy: Eh? I wonder what he'll think when he hears this.
Tohru: He?
Guy: Anyway, so you're born in the year of the dog...it seems we have good chemistry between us. (Leans towards Tohur) If it's alright with you, how about going for me? (Has a bag dropped and his head)
Another guy: I was wondering what you were gushing about...are you alright, Honda-san? My cousin caused you all this trouble...
Tohru: So...Souma-kun? Mom, this isn't real...It's Souma-kum! My high school prince...Souma Yuki-kun is standing right before my eyes.
Guy: (In the background) (Rubbing his head) The bag is really heavy.
Tohru: This is Souma Yuki-kun's house!
Guy: (Still in the background) Are there dictionariesor something else in there?
Yuki: Hmph, lots.
Guy: Heh, so you are Yuki's classmate? Agai, I'm Souma Shigure. Yuki's cousin.
Tohru: Oh, I'm Honda Tohru.
Yuki: Honda-san, why are you in a place like this?
Tohru: Aah...Well, my house is nearby...
Shigure and Yuki: Nearby?
Yuki: Here?
Tohru: Ah, Yes...
Shigure and Yuki: Hmm...
Tohru: A...ano... Well I'd better get going now...(Turns to leave)
Yuki: Umm... Honda-san...
Tohru: (Turns back around) Yes?
Yuki: Shall we go together?
Yuki's fan club: (Does some creepy moves while chanting) L O V E M E Yuki! (Get ignored by Yuki and Tohru) Ahh!
(AT SCHOOL)
Yuki fan girl #1: Honda-san! What was that about? (Corners Tohru with 2 other Yuki fan girl)
Yuki fan girl #2: Yes! Why were you coming to school together with Souma-kun? Explain!
Tohru: It was just a coincidence...
Yuki fan girl #3: If it was a coincidence, then there won't be a need to call the police, right?
Fan girl #1: The fact that there are no girls who don't understand "Kaiwara high, Freshman, Class D, Yuki Souma"... shows that he truly is beautiful!
Fan girl # 2: Is a super genius!
Fan girl #3: Is a super athlete!
Fan girl #1: Even we, who are members of his fan club, "Princess,"...aren't able to get close to him!
Voice: Oy...
Fan girls: (All turn around) Nani?
Tohru's friend: Tohru said it was just a coincidence. Don't bug her about it, idiots!
Fan girls: (All back up) Wh...what?
Fan girl #1: You think you "yankees" can solve anything with idle threats?
Tohru's other friend: You girls, want to be...-BEEP- by electric jolts?
(Fan girls run away)
Tohru: Uo-chan, Hana-chan you guys saved me!
Uo: You were being bugged Tohru, you're so sweet. (hugs Tohru)...and Hana-chan, please don't really send electric shocks.
(In class)
Tohru: Souma-kun is so pretty...so when I was next to him, I was so nervous! But I wasn't able to have much of a conversation with him.
Hana: I get a strange electric waves from him...
Uo: It came out, on Hana-chan's electricity report.
Tohru: What do you mean, strange?
Hana: As for that, I'm not sure...
Uo: Well, he does seem very secretive, that's for sure. And he doesn't really talk about himself, either. Before this, when a sophomore girrl asked him out and tried to get near...(a weird looking impression of Yuki pushing a girl away) he pushed her away, she must of been shocked. (Back to normal)
Hana: It's strange that there would be a person who puts up a barrier like that these days.
Tohru: Arigato-gozaimasu.
Uo: Tohru, don't you have to work part-time today?
Tohru: Yes, that's right.
Uo: That's not good...since you're still staying at your grandpa's place.
Tohru: Ah, Ye...Yes...
Uo: Is it because you promised him that you'll pay for your own tuition?
Tohru: Ye...Yes...
Hana: But...to pay for tuition in public school, I don't think you have to work that hard.
Tohru: That, that is...
Uo: Make sure you eat every meal regulary...and he's not stealing your part-time money, right?
Tohru: Yes.
UO: Understood? If something bad happens, you better tell us right away! I'll be sure to take care of it.
Tohru: Ye...Yes..I can't say it...that I live in a tent, I can't tell Uo-chan and Hana-chan! (A slide show looking thing appears with pictures of a younger Tohru and her mom) After Father's death...my mother worked very hard to make a living. And I never thought that Mother, who was always powerful and bright...(Now the slide show thing shows a picture of a car wreck) would die in an accident (Now it show Tohru standing with a bunch of people) I could've stayed with a lot of people during this... (Now it shows her grandfather) but in the end, I chose to stay with my paternal grandfather. (Now it shows Tohru and her grandfather) Since I didn't want to burden my granfather, who was living on his savings...I promised him that I'd pay for my own tuition. (Now is shows the outside of her grandfather's house) But, after it was decidied that he would live together with his daughter's family. And the house would be gotten rid of. (Now it shows Tohru and her grandfather again) He asked me if I had any friends I could stay with. (Now it shows Tohru with Hana and Uo in the background)Uo-chan lives in a one-room apartment...and Hana-chan is from a 5-member family. So, of coures I couldn't say anything. (Now it just shows Tohru) But then, I understood! This is an excellent chance! (the slide show is over)
(It is after school and Tohru runs into Yuki)
Tohru: Oh...Souma-kun...Thanks for this morning...
Yuki: No, I should be the one to say... since Shigure caused you trouble.
(Both are walking outside together)
Tohru: Not at all...Shigure's a great person. He allowed me to see the Chinese Zodiac figurines.
Yuki: Ahh...You said something about wanting to be born in the year of the Cat? Didn't you?
Tohur: I decided that when I was a kid...I...
Yuki:Cats are idiots...They have bad qualities...
Tohru: (stops walking) Huh?
Yuki: Honda-san, did you know? The Chinese Zodiac's 12 animals are in actuality "Jikkan" Chinese Zodiacs...
Tohru: Oh, no I don't...
Yuki: Originally it was used as a numeric device or a as a watch...Afterwards...the Buddhist form of the cosmic dual forces and the forces of the good and bad were added...so it became a thing used for fortunetelling.
Tohru: So it wasn't related to animals?
Yuki: No...although I'm not too sure myself how and when animals got involved in the story. But cats never belonged in the Zodiac from the beginning. And it still wanted to became friends with the 12 animals of the Zodiac...It's really stupid, the cat.
Tohru: Does this mean that...you hate cats?
Yuki: (turns and faces Tohru and catches and leaf beside her, that is falling from a tree) I thought so from this morning, but you seem somewhat pallid. You should take care of yourself. (tosses the leaf aside) Well, I'll see you again tomorrow. (walks away)
Tohru: He really is secretive. But, Souma-kun...(Now at work) I'll pretend I didn't hear that! Mother probably had it much much worse!
Some business guy: (opes the door to find it blocked by garbage bags) Hey, li'l lady! Hurry and clean up this trash!
Tohru: Yes. (Grabs the bags and runs) I'm not quitting! (Now cleaning what looks like shelves) Never give up~desu (Now she's mopping the floor)
(Shigure and Yuki are walking outside)
Shigure: Phew! If I eat this much everyday, I'll get sick of it.
Yuki: Well, then yuo make the food.
Shigure: Even if I make it, you're gonna complain.
Yuki: If pickled radish goes in my curry...I have a comulsion to say at least one complaint.
Shigure: Hmm...You're smart, Yuki, but you like such spicy and salty stuff. Ne don't you think we need a housekeeper?
Yuki: A female would just cause more trouble. (both stop walking) Huh? (both see Tohru walking towards her tent) Honda-san...
Tohru: (Talking to her mom's picture) I'm back, Mother. I'm really sleepy...but I have to write a paper for class tomorrow. (holdas up a sponge) I'll wash my face at least with water from the lake... (Exits the tent to find Yuki and Shigure standing outside)
Shigure: (Starts laughing)
Yuki: Shigure, you laugh too much.
(HALF WAY MARK)
(Now back at Shigure and Yuki's house)
Shigure: (Still laughing during the entire conversation)
Yuki: So, I see...you've been living in that tent?
Tohru: Yes...
Yuki: Since when?
Tohru: It's been a bit more than a week.
Yuki: I thought is was strange...since this area is under the Souma family's possession, and no one borrowed or bought the land.
Tohru: I'm begging you! Please lend me that place for just a while. When the construction ends, I'll move right away! I don't have much money, but I will pay! Please!
Shigure: (Done laughing) That place is dangerous, you know. The ground in the area is weak...and sometimes perverts come out. So I think it's impossible for a gril to live alone in a tent.
Yuki: Are you done laughing?
Shigure: Umm...
Tohru: It's alright! (Stands up) I already became acquainted with slugs and such! Physique...strenth, I have plenty of them! (starts to pass out)
Yuki: Honda-san! (Puts a hand on Tohru's forehead) You have a fever!
Shigure: Oh my...! (Opens the door to the ktichen, which is filled with garbage bags) Aah...
Tohru: That's one deep forest...
Shigure: That's a good metaphor for it. (Hears a dog bark) Hmm? (A dog howls) Hear that? There's definitely been a landslide somewhere.
Tohru: Excuse but, how do you know that?
Shigure: Humm...Well, you can say it's a natural instinct.
Yuki: Is it close?
Shigure: Close to the tent...or something like that.
(Back at the tent which is now buried under mud)
Tohru: Oh no! Mother!! Mother's picture is inside the tent! (Starts to dig in the mud) Mother! (nearly passes out again)
Yuki: (Is at her side) Honda-san, calm down, You have a fever.
Tohru: But my mother is...What can I do? If I don't take it out fast, Mother is going to get hurt!
Shigure: (puts his hand on Tohru's) When it gets brighter, let's come back. If you get hurt, your mothre will be much more saddened, right?
(Back at the house)
Shigure: Right now, Yuki is looking for some medicinal herbs...
Tohru: (Is under a blanket in bed) I'm sorry...
Shigure: You must be very tired. You pushed yourself too much.
Tohru: I lost my home again.
Shigure: Is it painful?
Tohru: No...I know of more painful things.
Shigure: Like what?
Tohru: I didn't say..."Please go and come back safely," the morning my mother got killed in the accident. (Pause) I had a small test...and so I was up until dawn studying. I couldn't wake up after...and so only that morning, I couldn't say it. I've always said it. But that morning...I was thinging of quitting high school...and start working. But...my mother said, (said in the voice of Tohru's mom)I only graduated from middle school...(flash back to a picture of Tohru and her mom) but I've always wanted to become a high school student...I want you to be different from me and have a high school life. (End flash back picture and back to Tohru's voice) It was at that moment...I realized that she was working for my sake. But, for such a mother like her...I didn't sayd, "Please go and come back safely," even to her back as she was going out to work. So at least high school...the high school that my mother desperately wanted me to attend, I want to graduate... That is my...goal. I won't lose to a fever...like this. (falls asleep)
Yuki: It's quite amazing. She's always cheerful at school...even though she was suffering and all. I was planning on running away from the Souma-house...but ultimately, I'd stil be the same "Souma". If I really couldn't stand it...I could have been like Honda-san, set up a tent, And even if I were to be miserable...I realized that I was just being a baby...
Shigure: To call it "amazing" is being rube to Tohru-kun.
Yuki: That's true. I have a request. Will you let me go out?
Shigure: Where? To dig out that? Shall I go too? It'll be difficult by yourself.
Yuki: By myself? Who are you saying that to? (door behind him opens to show lots of mice)
Shigure: Come back safely.
(Tohru's dream)
Voice of Tohru's mom: Tohru...Tohru? (Shows a picture of Tohru and her mom) You have a fever again...You don't have to try so hard to help out...Tohru, you can do things slowly your own way. Anyday, anytime...
(Dream over)
Tohru: (Half awake) But...(Sees her mom picture)
Tohru's mom's voice:...you can do things your own way.
Tohru: (Sits up and stares and the picture) Eh? Mother...(picks up the picture)...how?
Yuki: Ohayo~! (Outside holding some bags) How are you feeling?
Tohru: So...ah? Ohh....
Yuki: (Puts the bags on the veranda) I retrieved your things. Do you want to check them?
Tohru: Eh? Eh? Souma-kun, you brought back all the things by yourself?!
Yuki: (laughing) Of course not!
Tohru: Eh? But...how?
Yuki: S e c r e t...
Tohru: Huh?
Yuki: Even though it's a dirty house...
Tohru: Oh?
Yuki: ...and there are only males, There's an empty room upstairs...and so until the construction's over, You can stay here.
Tohru: Eh? No! I'm against that!
Yuki: There's locks on doors, you know.
Tohru: No, it's not that!
Shigure: (Appears outta nowhere) Tohru-kun, do you like doing household work?
Tohru: Acck!
Shigure: (Standing behind Tohru) For example, cleaning or cooking?
Tohru: Ehh...yes, I do like it...
Shigure: (in a sing-song voice) WECLOME TO THE SOUMA'S HOME! (Yuki and Shigure start walking carrying Tohru's bags) (Stops sing-song voice) I'll also help in movig the luggage. Oh, Yuki-kun. Lend her some clothes, ne?
Tohru: No! You two looked after me, and on top of that I'll get a room? I'm being too rude!
Yuki: (Stops and turns around and looks at Tohru) Honda-san, it's us who are doing this on our own...so don't think it's being rude. On top of that, you don't have a place to go, right?
Tohru: Yes...Well, if I will stay, then please tell me about the Souma family...And other things about...
Yuki: (cuts her off) Those things don't matter...Honda-san, you can do things slowly your own way...in this house.
Voice of Tohru's mom in Tohru's head: You can do things slowly your own way, Tohru...
Shigure: (Walking outside with Yuki) Well, is it really alright? To live with a girl?
Yuki: What's wrong with you? You were just overjoyed because of that. It'll be ok...as long as we don't hug. (get a quick glimps of a boy in a tree)
Tohru: (Standing in her new room) Well, that ended like that. It's like I just had a dream. On top of that, I even ended up borrowing clothes...
Yuki: (opening the window) It's deinitely moldy because the room's been shut tight for a long time. (Tohru's hears a noise above her and looks up, Yuki is looking out the window) It'll be a good idea to keep the windows open. (The roof breaks and a boy drops down)
Boy: Yo~! L've been washing my necking waiting Let's go.
Yuki: How about just giving up? (turns and faces the boy while leaning and the window sill) Since you're so weak?
Boy: (Get's really mad) Eh? If you think I'm the same as beofre, you're gonna get hurt! I'll crush that ego of yours! (lunges towards Yuki)
Tohru: (Runs towards to boy) Ah! Please wiat a second! (Slips on a piece of wood and hugs him)
(Loud poping noise with orange smoke) (Tohru falls on the ground)
Shigure: (Looks in the door) Yuki-kun~! I just heard a loud noise did kyo come, by and chance?
Tohru: (get's up) I'm so soryy! Are you alright? (Is now holding an orange cat) Ack! He turned into a cat! (shakes poor Kyo) A cat! Right in front of my eyes! (Stops shaking Kyo) We have to get him to a doctor or...(a piece of wood hits her on the head)
Yuki: Honda-san!
Shigure: Tohru-kun!
(Tohru falls on Yuki and Shigure and there's a loud poping nosie with pinky colored and blue smoke and Tohru is now staring at a black dog and a gray mouse)
Tohru: Mother...it's an emergency! Everyone...turned into animals!
