Kill the Gator!!!

This small page is concerned with only one thing to Kill the Gator that is included in some versions of Cheetachat. The first question many would ask is why kill Gator? Well I shutter to think about any site, server, or even some family members having access to my passwords, even with the best of intentions. Things can happen intended or not if you leave yourself open to it. That is to me the weak point of using programs like this one. Perhaps it is just me, but I would rather type them in than give access to my accounts to someone who I do not know, have no way of knowing how secure the information is, and I would just bet it is not encrypted when it is sent also. You may not think it is a big deal but if they get your account passwords on say a site like Yahoo and you are also using things like Yahoo Wallet or something they have Credit card numbers. Ok if not that, how about your phone number and address? It is after all in the profiles on many sites if you have left it there. How about your personal email? See what I mean? If these are not big concerns to you, then feel free to ignore the rest of this page because it will not be of interest to you anyway.

The method used to remove Gator varies slightly depending on if you mistakenly installed it with the Cheetachat software or not. If you have not unchecked the install additional software offers when installing the Cheetachat software, you have installed the Gator program. To remove it go to START, SETTINGS, CONTROL PANEL, ADD/REMOVE Software... Look for FSG.EXE in the listing of installed software and select to remove it. If it is not listed there, it is still a good idea to do the following, and if it was listed there I strongly suggest this after you have uninstalled it. Open My Computer or Windows Explorer ( which ever you are most comfortable with ) and then going to the install folder for Cheetachat. Normally on most systems this is C:\Program Files\Cheetachat ( by default, if you changed it of course it may be different ) and look for FSG.EXE. If it is there and you have already uninstalled it, highlight this and select DELETE this file. Windows may caution you this is a program file and are you sure you wish to delete it. I strongly suggest answering Yes.

The next step is to get a program by Lavasoftusa called Ad Aware which is a free download and will deal with the DLL files for Gator and afew other programs as well. Lets you delete the DLLs you want to also... I recommend it's use for the final stake threw the heart of the Gator beast... I will however tell you as far as I know at this point, if you have not installed ( downloaded the entire Gator program ) it should not have left any other surprizes on your computer. The FSG.EXE program is just a " tickler " to try to get you interested in using GATOR. It simply keeps reminding you with ads and so on. You need to download the rest of the program to have the entire program. Removing the FSG.EXE file and installed tickler will stop the suggestions that you try Gator. I just know I have not seen any requests by the FSG.EXE program on my LeakTested firewalls so I am assuming it is not reporting anything back to headquarters.

If you have Cheetachat 6.3.x version you might also look for FSG.EXE in that folder as well. The Gator Tickler started showing up in Cheetachat around the time of the 6.3.5 release as I recall. I cannot recall for sure but it has been included in the download package for sometime. I am not sure it was always set to install by default however. I also do not know as Cheetachat is the only software that has this added in with the install package. If you wish I would suggest you do a drive search of the contents of your drive and look for other folders that may also contain it. If you do find anymore FSG.EXE files however do not assume they are the Gator Tickler. Highlight them and right click to see what the properties are for the file, and it should list the file details so you can be sure what you are removing before you proceed....

For those who are installing CheetaChat7 Beta software and have an existing version of Cheetachat currently on their computer. You might wish to consider installing Cheetachat 7 Beta into a different folder than the default one selected by the installer that comes with Cheeta7. It is currently set to install it into the same folder as the existing version ( if present ) of Cheetachat 6.3.x. This may prevent your version 6.3.x of the Cheetachat software from working correctly. ( I am not sure about this but I suspect it will kill the old version or parts of it ) I generally would suggest you add _beta to both the settings used in the installer for both the folder the program is supposed to be installed into and the program name. This will ensure that you will retain the use of the current version of Cheetachat software installed. While the Version 7Beta of Cheetachat has many good features, it also has a few problems and omissions that may be a problem if you happen to require them in your chat client. ( such as club support or something ) So this will help prevent you from making an error that may be a larger problem ( like trying to replace macro files or something you spend hours doing ).

Close this browser window when you are done....( or not if you wish it is up to you. )

To print this if you need to do so, right click, then select all, then copy, then open Notepad and right click and paste. ( I think this will save you some ink using Notepad compared to a direct browser print of the HTML version ) Name the file and save it if you wish to do so and print it whenever.
