Yahoo Profile Help Page
by Easy_2_Confuse

One of the most often asked questions in the Yahoo Chat Help Rooms is, "how to I add a picture to my profile."  This is my small attempt to explain the how to's about dealing with the Yahoo Profile.  Please keep in mind this information is for USA/North American Yahoo users generally. The screen layout and options may be different for those using Yahoo servers located in Europe, Asia, Africa or Australia.   I do not see the other versions of profiles or screens you may see on these servers outside the USA, so it is almost impossible for me to provide detailed information for those servers/accounts, without the means to see the same screens you may be seeing. That being said however many of the areas would be close enough to the same to be able to give you the basics needed to edit the profile for those areas. Note there are image files on this page, and they also have added texts to those image files to help explain the links on the pages/screens you will see.

If you are having trouble loading profiles from chat, then try this simple way below.
1) Enter the person's ID in the box below
2) Click view, and the persons profile will pop up.

Needless to say this is the first screen you see when you enter Yahoo Chat if you have ever used the browser to chat with. If you have never seen this screen you apparently have never chatted with the browser and have always used a chat client to access Yahoo Chat. If you do not know how to get to the main chat entrance screen, here is a link do so. http://chat.yahoo.com/ It should open in a new Window on your browser if you wish to follow along. You should be able to switch between browser windows by selecting the correct two buttons on your taskbar at the bottom of the screen. One should say Yahoo!Chat, the other should say Profile_help-... The Screen you will see should look more or less like the one shown to the right or above, depending on your screen resolution settings. (there will be some differences such as desktop color options, Operating system version, and of course the "coming events" down the left side of the screen. ) One of the first things you should see is your ID shown almost in the top left corner. If you do not it is most likely because you are not logged in. Do so by suppling the ID and correct password. Then your screen should have your ID. You will notice there is a link to change your profile ( if you have more than one installed on your account.) and or to ADD/Change the profile settings. To Edit pictures, profile information, add links to webpages, add new profiles/IDs/Names, click on the highlighted link. If you are trying to use JAVA instead of the HTML chat you should find the way to change that to JAVA on the right side directly across from your ID which has already been mentioned. Below this area you will see Favorite Rooms, which you can add or remove by using the edit button or go to the room listed there by clicking on the room name. ( so you will not have to go threw the entire room list.) You will also see links to rooms that are "featured" and upcoming events such as live online chats. To the lower right you will see any friends that may also be on your friends list that are in chat listed. This allows you a chance to find a friend in chat without a large, extended, hunt for them.

click for larget view - profile1.jpg         The screen here seems pretty easy to figure out but in the event you are having problems I will go over the basic points. If you wish to add a new profile to your existing account there is a button that is gray and toward the top center of the page to add a new ID. If you type in a new name on the screen you will go to with this button and it is a name already in use it will tell you the name is in use. If you are bounced back to the main chat page, the new name will appear when you click on the add/change button again in the list of profiles on your account. To do things like ADD pictures, or change the profile information, such as displayed links or texts that appear on your profile, click the EDIT that is the the right of the profile ID you wish to worth on. If you have more than one name or Identity, you will need to add a picture to EACH profile for it to be seen on that profile. In other words, if you have 7 profiles, ( the maximum number possible on one account ) you could have up to 7 different pictures as profile pictures. There is a box toward the bottom of the screen that says hide your online status. This works to some extent but do rely on this making you invisable to all in Messenger or in Chat. Sometimes it does not work and with clients being used also that status is often not the same for everyone. You will see links to delete profiles you no longer want. This does not apply to the main account profile. If you made the account with an ID you no longer use, you will have to retain it or close the account by the link you can locate on the HELP link at the top right of this page. Once you delete a profile all information about it is no longer available. So delete with care if you have friends lists you wish to keep.

click for larger view - profile2.jpg          This is the screen where most of the changes to a given profile are done. From here you can find links to edit the displayed profile ( not account ) information that is seen on your profile, insert a WAV file by linking to it from a spot on a webpage or uploaded WAV file to your briefcase. ( see Yahoo's Briefcase help for more information about that matter ) Of course you can also EDIT or UPLOAD a picture from the links on this page. A few words before we go too far here however. Keep in mind no one wants a 1600x1200 image of you on a profile that takes forever and a day on some slower connections to download. So please use some common sence when selecting a picture to be placed on a profile. Generally direct placement (uploading an image solely for use on the profile) has some limitations such as 10kb or smaller and JPG format images are generally all that is allowed. With the option of linking to webpage or photo album image files however the size of a given image could be far larger than the normal profile image. Doing things this way however often slows the profile viewing down greatly and is a large waste of bandwidth since images will generally be reduced to fit within the size allowed for by the profile. This limit is more than exceeded with about a7kb JPG image file ( about 150x 150 pixels, or in most cases about 2" X 2" on the screen ) So if you only have a large file save yourself, and everyone else alot of time and use an image editor to reduce the size of the image to something a bit more manageable. If you do not have an image file here is a link to a page that will go over the basics about image editing and provide you with a link to a good freeware image editor. http://www.geocities.com/nhyrvana/ifran.html ( this page will open in a new browser window.)

click for larger view - profile3.jpg          I have made this a bit larger as the most frequent question heard in Yahoo Chat Help is how to upload a picture to my profile. This is the screen that is done on. If you have a picture that is within the size limit allowed to be directly uploaded to a profile ( see the above about that subject ) you can just browse to the image as stored on your computer in the correct size JPG format, select the image from the Windows dialog box, and then select OK. The image should upload to Yahoo and then you should be able to see that image on your profile. The next possible option is to point ot a picture on the web. Generally this is referring to websites that you may have a picture of yours stored at. Free webspace for webpages is not hard to find and as long as the host of the webpage allows direct calls to non-HTML files the use of a webpage based image is a very good option if you do not get carried away as far as the size of the image file. Keep in mind JPG image format is generally the smallest format that is widely supported and is about 10% or less the size of the same in BMP format and about half the size of a picture in GIF format. So try to keep your image sizes for profile pictures under about 25k at the largest. Choosing a picture from the Yahoo gallery is also possible if you wish to do so. These pictures are really what tends to be referred to as AVATARS, in that they are little more than a symbol like a game piece on a board game. The last option is if you have a Yahoo Photo Album and have a picture stored there. ( see Yahoo Help for help about Photo Albums ) You can store images there if you do not have a webpage and the images can be called upon just like those found on a webpage. Deleting the current image should be used before changing from an existing image to a new image. If you have an existing image and have not been successful uploading a new image file, try to delete the former image using this function first. To be honest about it I am not totally sure about the code deal at the end of the process here but I would say it is not going to work if you do not enter the correct code in the box befure any upload or change is done.

If this page did not provide you with the information you need, check the HELP at the top right on most of the Yahoo pages. In most cases this will provide you with detailed help about a given process. Also try http://www.geocities.com/nhyrvana/ for additional help on subjects not covered by this page.
