I was just blown away by this park. Upland was more than just a skateboard park to me. My wife and I would go there on vacation. Upland was located in a beautiful mountain aria in California. It was far enough away from where we were living in Vista, California, to make it seem like we were really getting away from it all by going there. I know that it seems by reading any skateboard magazine, that these parks are plentiful today, but in the late 1980’s they where very few and far between. The place seemed humongous! It was so cool skating in huge pools and not having to worry about police and such. I was not that good at the time I went there so sometimes I would skate into the bottom and have to crawl my way out. I am wearing a stupid orange helmet I bought cheap. I through that out. I have the knee pads and am wearing them in the new videos as elbow pads. My wife was the photographer back then too. I am doing a boneless in one photo I was good at those and always have been . I was good at pumping as you can see by me just barely making it up the top. I am not sure but I may have learned how to pump at this park. In one picture I am going down this huge gully like half tunnel that was fun. It let out into the biggest bowl I had every seen. Notice all the cool cloths I had. I used to get them for free from Tracker since I worked there. I think those are the Airwalk Sneakers I used to own. Those black things are shin guards that I still own and may be wearing soon. It seems like the better you get the more you hit your shins with the board. I have notches on my shin bones. I think that is how you can tell if you are a true skater, by those shin bone notches. I think there is a scene in Animal Chin about that. Despite what any one will tell you I always did good around kids. My wife was always with me most of the time and could vouch for that. I always felt that it was very important to set a good example. It was as if it was my duty in life. It weighed heavy on my heart all my life and in every thing I did, especially concerning skateboarding. Having got this old and never having kids I do not know what is like to be a parent and have always felt it is not my place to give advice or to try to be parent like. Back in the late 1980’s even, skating around kids like the famous pro Danny Way, I stayed to myself and kept a neat appearance and never talk bad or swore. I remember talking to Danny a few times, he was a real rebel sometimes. I always held back, like I said I was never a parent and did not think it was right to tell a kid they where wrong. Just before I left Southern California people used to call me a Jesus freak, because I used to hand out tracts I drew myself, in comic form. I had become angelic like and I think it had to do with my, duty in life situation I had been in for so long. I am sure Larry Balma and the folks at Tracker could vouch for this too.
