SATURDAY NOVEMBER 15, 2014 --CENTRAL TEXAS CHAPTER NRHS PROGRAM IN TEMPLE tEXAS 2;00PM

The Central Texas Chapter of the National Railroad Historical Society invites you to join us for a discussion of modern day railroading on Saturday, November 15th at 2 pm on the 3rd Floor of the Temple Public Library, 100 West Adams Avenue. The program will focus its discussion on the rail operations of Union Pacific Railroad in Central Texas.

Temple was founded by the Santa Fe railroad and is primarily a Santa Fe town; but Temple has another railroad, the Union Pacific. The rail line and historic depot, near the East Adams Avenue overpass, were once a part of the Missouri & Kansas Texas 3,377 mile rail network until it was acquired by the Union Pacific Railroad in 1988.

Historically, train operations beyond the crew in the locomotive cab were under the jurisdiction of the Train-master who at one time was required to walk the tracks, use a motorcar, or a hi-rail car. Union Pacific now call these employees MTO (Manager of Train Operations). Roland, our guest, is employed by Union Pacific to supervise territory from Ft. Worth to Waco then onto two different diverging routes south of Waco, one of which comes through Temple. His job is to supervise the railroad’s 32,000 mile network and to address problems including crew shortages, weather, track outages, and anything that would otherwise slow traffic flow and result in system-wide delays in order to keep Union Pacific’s customers happy. He will be discussing his skills and the many requirements of his rewarding career with Union Pacific in a program that will be of interest to everyone, even if you not a rail enthusiast.

The Central Texas Chapter of the National Railroad Historical Society invites you to attend this one-of-a kind program you do not want to miss!! The public is invited. We will allow time for questions at the conclusion of the program. For additional information about the program or society, please contact Jeremy at 254-773-4759

The History Center (Diboll ,Tx) Now Online !!

The History Center has its Web site up in running now. Check back from time to time as more features and exhibits are added:

http://www.thehistorycenteronline.com/

When you find the online exhibit for locomotive No. 13, it includes a sound file when it was in operation.

Union Pacific Navasota Sub Train Info

A new web feature is being unveiled here in central Texas railfan land. How about a look over the Navasota sub dispatcher's shoulder? Well now you can (somewhat):

http://bryanatcs.no-ip.info:2000/

The page is experimental and will likely have a couple of bugs still and you will need to use Internet Explorer to view it. There is an "About" link at the bottom that takes you to a quickly put together page briefly telling what you are seeing and how it is done.

Comments and question are always welcome.

There IS an on-line version of the Official Railway Equipment Register.

It's called the Universal Machine Language Equipment Register, or UMLER.  You can access it through the BNSF web site at

http://www.bnsf.com/cws/eqpumlerpublic/

and it doesn't require a password.  (It's listed under "equipment characteristics" at the bottom of the PLAN page.) It doesn't have reporting marks, but you can enter up to 300 cars at a time and it will give you:

car type
plate code
roof type
tare weight
gross allowed
load limit
dry and liquid capacity
internal and external l/w/h
side and end door w/h

This thing has all of the freight cars in the ORER, i.e. virtually every car in North America.

It also gives some basic locomotive
dimensions.  Modelers should find this useful, and some railfans may
find it entertaining:0)
