  My Flying Ghost

In 1996 I stumbled across an item at Toys R Us that I knew would be perfect for a flying ghost, Sky Racers by Cap Toys.  Basically it's a small vehicle that runs on a thick plastic string with a remote control for moving it forward and backward on the string.  It runs on batteries.  The vehicle runs on top of the string and is detachable.  I used an old ghost sheet from a broken prop, cutting a slit in the head and slipping it over the racer.  I tape it in place.  I have one string track under the overhang spanning the length of  the front porch (my haunting area) and run the ghost as the Trick-or-Treaters leave the house. I have the remote taped to my witches broom and pretend to sweep so they don't see me working it. Since I also have yearly parties, I also ran a string track in my billiard room at one end of the pool table.  I keep the ghost parked on one side of the room so as not to be in the way and run it back and forth throughout the evening.  The first couple times I used it, people couldn't figure out how it moved.  But, now they all know the secret and everyone enjoys playing with it.  After looking at these photos, I think I'll paint the sky racer vehicle white.

Sky Racer and Remote

Limitations

It can only handle a light object attached to it (like thin cloth) otherwise, the string will sag from the weight and the vehicle would be unable to move.   The covering cannot interfere with the wheels it rides on.  The string needs to be set up fairly level although you could have a long, low degree incline.   Also, I would not allow the vehicle to be exposed to the elements.  I do not know if this toy is still available in stores but, you may be able to find it Used in yard sales, etc.  It is a wonderfully simple addition to my haunt!

My Flying Ghost with a Fiend

In 2004, I found that Party City had a Flying Ghost that worked on the same principle as the Sky Racer for about $15. I did not buy one since I have the original and I thought the face on the ghost was too goofy.
