These pages will be dedicated to poetry and/or speeches
that I have found to have touched me in different ways
throughout my life and have affected how I view life.

IF

If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you;
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
and make allowance for their doubting too;
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or, being lied about, don't deal in lies,
Or, being hated, don't give way to hating,
And yet don't look too good, nor talk too wise;

If you can dream--and not make dreams your master;
If you can think--and not make thoughts your aim;
If you can meet with triumph and disaster
And treat those two impostors just the same;
If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to broken,
And stoop and build 'em up with worn out tools;

If you can make one heap of all your winnings
And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
And lose, and start again at your beginnings
And never breathe a word about your loss;
If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
To serve your turn long after they are gone,
And to hold on when there is nothing in you except the will
which ays to them: "Hold on";

If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
Or walk with kings--nor lose the common touch;
If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you;
If all men count with you, but none too much;
If you can fill the unforgiving minute with sixty
seconds worth of distance run
--Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,
And--which is more
--you'll be a Man, my son!

Rudyard Kipling

Dare Mighty Things

"In the battle of life, it is not the critic who counts;
nor the one who points out how the strong person stumbled,
or where the doer of a deed could have done better.

The credit belongs to the person who is actually in the
arena; whose face is marreed by dust and sweat and blood,
who strives valiantly; who errs and comes short again
and again, because there is no effort without error and
shortcoming; who does actually strive to do deeds;
who knows the great enthusiasms, the great devotion,
spends oneself in a worth cause; who at the best knows
in the end the triumph of high achievement; and who at worst,
if he or she fails, at least fails while daring greatly.

Far better it is to dare mighty things, to win glorious
triumphs even though checkered by failure, than to rank
with those timid spirits who neither enjoy nor suffer much
because they live in the gray twilight that knows neither
victory nor defeat."

Theodore Roosevelt

Needed----
Men and Women of Character

The world needs men and women...
who cannot be bought;
whose word is their bond;
who put character above wealth;
who possess opinions and a strong will;
who are larger than their vocations;
who do not hesitate to take risks;
who will not lose their individuality in a crowd;
who will be as honest in small affairs as in greater;
who will make no compromise with wrong;
whose ambitions are not confined to their own selfish desires;
who will not say they do it "because everybody else does it";
who are true to their friends through good and bad,
in adversity as well as in prosperity;
who do not believe that shrewdness, cunning, and
hardheadedness are the best qualities for winning success;
who are not ashamed or afraid to stand
for the truth when it is unpopular;
who can say "no" with emphasis, although all the rest
of the world says "yes".

Blades Of Grass

In heaven,
Some little blades of grass
Stood before God.
"What did you do?"
Then all save one of the little blades
Began eagerly to relate
The merits of their lives.
This one stayed a small way behind,
Ashamed.
Presently, God said,
"And what did you do?"
The little blade answered, "O my Lord,
Memory is bitter to me,
For, if I did good deeds,
I know not of them."
Then God, in all His splendour,
Arose from His throne, "O best little blade of grass!" He said.
