Actually, I am still researching the history of the ambulance, as there doesn't seem to be much available as far as any records go at the current time. Hopefully I will be able to add to this history as time permits (and the library's stacks of old newspapers reveal).
As of today, January 4, 2000, to the best of my knowledge our service consists of 14 EMT-Basics, 3 EMT-Intermediates (myself included), 4 RN's, 1 EVOC certified driver, and 3 new EMT-B hopefuls who are currently awaiting their test results! It is really tough to stretch this many people out to cover the pager 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, but so far we are hanging in there....
It really seems to me that a lot of South Dakota volunteer ambulance services are really struggling to keep themselves manned anymore, according to different people I have talked to across the state, and I really don't understand just why more people don't come forward to help out. I'm really curious as to whether this is a trend all across the country or if South Dakota, covering primarily rural areas, is unique in this aspect. I personally feel that fewer and fewer people are willing to give their time to volunteer work anymore....
The Hudson Volunteer Ambulance Service was first started in 1973, by a small hardworking group of people who felt the community needed an ambulance service. These people worked really hard to get this service up and running, going door-to-door to solicit a lot of the funding needed to get the ambulance going....and the rest is history!!!
