George Conover Odneal was born Sept 22, 1846 in Moniteau Co., MO. I believe he went by Conover. He attended the Felder public school and Prairie Home College.
Although George was not yet 15 years old when the Civil War began, according to Confederate records, he was in the army from 1861 until the end. He was a private in Co. D of Shelby's Army serving in Missouri, Arkansas and Texas. Their is a good chance that he and his cousin William Jefferson were at the battle of Prairie Grove, Arkansas in December of 1862.  It is likely George and William Jefferson knew the James Brothers and the Youngers before they became outlaws as they were a part of Quantrails Guerrilas, a support group for Shelby's Army.  He appears on a prisoner of War roll for Company's C, D & E of 9th Elliotts Regiment Missouri Volunteer Calavery. Confererate States Army, Commanded by Capt. Davenport surrendered at New Orleans, LA by Gen. E. K. Smith, C. S. A. to Maj. Gen. E. R. S. Canby U S Army, May 26, 1865 & paroled at Shreveport, LA June 14, 1865. Residence given as Cooper Co., MO. Conover had some narrow escapes, was severely wounded, and carried a piece of shell in his side for many years after the war before having it removed.
After the Civil War he spent all his life in Cooper Co., North Moniteau Township, MO engaged in farming and stock raising. On Sept. 30, 1875 Conover married Martha Jane Harris. They had four children; John Porter died at age ten, the other children, Nora Alice, Flara Mae, and Thomas Aubra all married and had families. Conover's farm was located on the corner of what is now Hwy WW and Felder Rd. Conover died April 15, 1924 and Martha died Jan. 25, 1932, they are both buried in Harris Cemetery, located 2.5 miles South West of Prairie Home, MO on Hwy W.
