"...After receiving his Ph.D. degree, Lucius became Professor of Education at Lewis and Clark University in Portland. OR. Mrs. Cunningham relates this story that shows the kind nature of this man. "During World War II he (Lucius) came by bus to visit us in North Carolina on the way to see about his invalid brother in South Carolina. When he got off the bus looking a bit disheveled and damp, he apologized and explained. All bus seats were filled the night before when a Negro woman carrying a heavy (year old) baby got on after bidding her soldier husband a tearful good bye. When he saw that she would have to stand, burdened by that heavy child, Cousin Lucius asked his seat mate, "Do you object if I give this lady my seat." The man used some ugly language in refusing. At the time Negroes in the South still had to take back seats, or stand. So, our dear Cousin, born and reared in the South, said, "Madam, may I hold your baby." He held the baby all night!" His S S # was 541-36-6596.
