Piercings

As you might have noticed, I love piercings :)  And so, I decided to dedicate a small section of my site to this amazing form of Body Art.  I myself have 13 piercings up to now.

Earlobes
I got my first pair of piercings when I was still a very young child.  They are the standard earlobe piercings.. those which are socially acceptable, and not even regarded as piercings, when on a woman.  I recall sitting on a chair, in some jeweller's shop, and the guy giving me my first pair of piercings with a piercing gun (AVOID PIERCING GUNS! See more info below).  I don't recall any pain, nor crying or something like that.  But I remember myself looking in a mirror and smiling.

Reason - I guess my parents thought I was grown-up enough to own a pair of earrings.

Upper Cartilage - Right.
Then, when I was more or less 12 or 13, I pierced the cartilage of my right ear.  Got it done at a pharmacy which is situated in Paola, again, with a piercing gun.  Hurt me like hell.  This one piercing is totally fucked up, I'm sorry to say.  A small lump grew on the back side of it, and it still hasn't healed completely... even if it's been 5 yrs now since I've had it done.

Reason - I was building an identity for myself.  I had been listening to metal music for a few years back then, and I guess I wanted to look more..... rocker-ish?  Anyway I see it as the start of becoming who I am today.  A sign of independence, so to say.

Nostril no.1 - Right
At about 14, I got my first nostril piercing done.  It's in the right nostril.  Got it done at a jeweller's (most probably, the same they took me to when I was still very young to get my earlobes done) which is located in Paola.  It didn't hurt at all, especially when comparing it to the upper cartilage one.  I blame it on the fact that there's no pin thingie to put pressure against the piercing.  (Pin thingie.... the back piece of the stud earring)

Reason - The year 2000 was quite an important year of my life.  Two of my friends had died that year, and in November I had gotten into my first long-term relationship, which lasted 2 yrs and a half.  I got the nosering done in December - because things were finally working out the way I wanted them to.

Mid-ear - Left and Nostril no.2 - Right
Then in 2003, in the beginning of June, I went with 2 friends of mine to get my 2nd nostril piercing, and one in my mid-ear (on the outer edge).  Again, Piercing Gun.  Got them done at a jewellery - a different one than the previous experience.  Different town.  This one was done at the Blue Spirit jewellery shop, situated in the Embassy Shopping Complex, located in Valletta.  The nostril one didn't hurt, just like the previous one.  The one in my mid-ear didn't hurt much either.  Now that it's healed, I realised that the mid-ear one is placed a bit too low for my liking.  But oh well, I guess that just leaves more room for me to pierce :))

Reason - My 2yr and a half relationship had just ended, and I started another long-term relationship which lasted 1yr and 4months.  I guess that was the reason for getting two piercings done on the same occasion.  One to symbolise an end, and the other, a new beginning.

Labret - Middle
In September 2004, I got my labret done.  And this time, I had it done in a piercing studio (YAY!!!!!!!!!!!!) - at The Tat Shack, situated in St. Paul's Bay.  The piercing was carried out by Ghiller, who I consider as being my only option for piercings.  I was astonished to how painless this one was.  It hurt even LESS than my nostril ones!!! All I felt was a slight pinch (very very very subtle and slight) when the needle went in.  I just couldn't stop smiling and looking in mirrors!
As soon as I got out of the shop, i sent an sms to Karina (see Friends) and told her about it.  I ended up going at her workplace so that she could see it! She's my modification-buddy haha :) Whenever I get something new, I sms her and go "Kar Kar Kar guess what? :D" and she's be like "Changed hair colour? New piercing?" and then I'll phone her up and tell her all about it.  Her usual response would be "Where are you?? When am I going to see it?! Let's meet up!!!!! :)"

Reason - It was my birthday present to myself.  Had just had my 18th birthday.  I wanted to experience a real piercing.  I desperately wanted to go in a Tattoo & Piercing studio and go out of there with a 'medal of war'.  I chose to go to that particular place because I knew people who had got tats and piercings done by Ghiller, and I loved the work.  And so he was my natural choice.
It was a Friday evening, straight after school.  I caught a bus to The Flying Colours Tattoo & Piercing Studio (which is Ghiller's studio) but he wasn't there, so I had to catch another 2 buses to go the The Tat Shack (Ghiller & Deano's studio).  I was totally determined to get it done.  I had been wanting it for a looooooooong time!!!  It was also symbolic of a new stage of my life.  My 1yr and 4months relationship had ended, and my great aunt had died.  Both occurred in August.  So now I ended up with 2 piercings related to this particular relationship.... one to show the birth, and the other the death of it.

Bridge - Vertical
Time went by, and I felt the necessity of getting another piercing done.  This was the time for my bridge to be pierced.  For those who don't know what it is, refer to the Glossary below.  This one was done in November.  When I decided I wanted to get it done, I was still at school.  I ended up leaving early (thus, skipping some lessons), and catching 2 buses to go to The Tat Shack, only to find that Ghiller was at The Flying Colours.   Yet another 2 buses!  Then I walked in, told him what I wanted, lied down on the couch, and got it done.  This piercing was TOTALLY PAINLESS!!!!! Not even the pinch of the needle was felt!!
Obviously, as soon as I walked out, I phoned Karina :) And went round at hers.  In the meanwhile I messaged Maria (see Friends) and as soon as I told her, she called me insane :D
My mother didn't get to see it before the following morning, since Karina and myself went out and stayed out till bedtime (and as I am writing this, she just walked in the room. Luv ya mum :D).  She came to see if I wanted anything before I go to school.... and I looked up to her face, and she noticed it.  She sat down, and burst crying (lol. poor mum!) and went like "You had such a beautiful face!!!! We did you ruin it?! You're gonna end up like a sieve!!!".
Then, I went to school wearing these yellow-tinted 'sunglasses' just cos the frame was thick enough to hide the new piercing.... and at first some girls in class started saying I'm crazy for wearing those glasses in class.... the lecturer just told them "they're just spectacles".... and then I slided them down, looked at the girls, and grinned.  They were SHOCKED to say the least *grin!!!* :D  My friends were like "SHIT! Did that hurt? You're fucking crazy :)"

Reason - I was losing the focus on my life.  I wanted something which could help me look ahead.  So what's better than piercing my bridge?  It's there to remind me to focus on things and take reasonable decisions.  Even though I fucked up a few times since then, it still helped me quite a bit to regain my life.

Eyebrow - Left
I got this one done on the 11th of February 2005 - two weeks ago, that is.  My first piercing of the year 2005 :)  I got it done at The Flying Colours, by Ghiller.  This time, I didn't go alone though.  I went with my elder sister Christine, who's 20.  Usually I go alone, since for me, they're an intimate procedure, and very very personal.  It's almost like confessing your sins, or having sex.  You don't want other people you know around you - you want your privacy while undergoing the change.  Like when you lose your virginity I guess. :)
When my sis saw all the enthusiasm and fear I had before entering the studio, she told me "I didn't think you'd make such a big deal out of it! I thought you just come here, stay cool and relaxed, and get it done as if it were nothing :)".  My reply was "I just love the tension I get before getting it done :) You have no idea how I feel everything I come here.  It's a rush of adrenaline... a total buzz :D"
My eyebrow was the first piercing I got at a piercing studio which was done without anaesthetic.  I loved the feeling!  In fact, I decided to get my following one without anaesthetic as well, to feel the realness of it.  I was kindof disappointed though, because the piercing, once done, was barely making its presence known.  I couldn't feel the pain throbbing or anything.  I only felt its presence when I squeezed my eyes shut.  That would make me happy :)  Now that 2 weeks have gone by, I can't feel a thing.  I just known it's there, and sometimes see it, if I focus enough.
Oh, and yes - once more I called Karina to tell her about it :D  But we couldn't meet on that day cos we were both busy. So she got to see it later on that week.  Maria started offending me when I told her about it.... at first she told me not to get any more done... and then that, had I told her, she'd have come along and done her labret :D

Reason - The reason why I got this one done was because I craved a new piercing :) But the symbolic meaning of this was, a truce with my sister.  That's why I took her along with me.  We had a major argument..... the most terrible one we ever had.  I wanted to show her that I didn't mean all the nasty things I told her, and that I love her.  So when I calmed down from my anger, I messaged her and told her "Hey chri how are you? When are you going to come with me to Ghiller's to get a new piercing done? :D" And the next day, we met, talked, and after setting things out straight, I told her "Right.  We're off :D" and we went to the studio, I got it done, then we went to eat something together :)  So this one will forever remind me that I have a sister that loves me and cares for me, even though we fight and argue a lot.  Love u sis :)
I got it done on my left eyebrow so that I balance things out a bit, since 4 of my piercings are on my right side of the head - and 2 in the middle :)

Nostril - Left
Only a few days went by, and on Saturday 15th February,2005, I met up with Maria to take her to Ghiller's to get her labret done.  Obviously, I wasn't going to go in there and walk out with nothing :)  And so I got my left nostril pierced.  It took some contemplation, because at first I was going to get an industrial done in my left ear, but he didn't have a barbell long enough in stock to get me an industrial done this time.  So it had to be postponed to the near future.  Then I was thinking of doing my septum, but decided not to do it yet.  So I got my new piercing in my left nostril, which was still virgin, compared to the right one, which has been pierced twice up to now.
It was done without anaesthetic, and it hurt like fuck to get the needle in!  I jumped in my chair twice hehe... and a tear trickled down my left cheek :)  And then, the damned ball wouldn't get screwed on properly the barbell lol! A barbell like the ones used for labrets has been put in.  But anyway, it didn't hurt me at all after the barbell was in.

Reason - Like I said, I didn't want to walk out barehanded (or bare-faced hehe) from the studio.  After having my eyebrow done, I craved more and more... and MORE!!!!!!!!!!! The feeling of getting pierced without anaesthetic was too good :) And the fact that my eyebrow piercing wasn't hurting me at all was pissing me off hehe.  This one is symbolic of my friendship with Maria.  And it will surely remind me of all the useless hassles I got myself in lately.

Septum
Months went by without me getting any new piercings... Didn't feel the need.  But then, on the 12th April, the craving for a new one got fulfilled.  I stopped by at Ghiller's Flying Colours Piercing & Tattoo Studio, down at Senglea, and called him up cos the studio was still closed.  He eventually arrived, and we went in.  We sat down and I told him what I wanted.  And so the whole thing began.  He gout everything ready, put on some music, and we started talking before he performed the piercing, while he was putting on his black latex gloves, choosing a straight barbell for me and all that.  And then, the big step.  He put on some Freeze Spray on the septum, and told me not to breathe.  And then, the pain kicked in.  He pierced my septum with a 14 gauge needle (excuse my American terminology, I'm not used to measure piercings the European way.)  Just as he put in the barbell, I heard him say "Fuckin bitch, it's crooked" and I told him "What?!" and he told me to look in the mirror and see for myself.
I got up, tears streaming down my face (normal reaction to nose piercings apparently) and I saw the most horrendously crooked piercing ever!! One of the balls of my barbell was somewhere up my nostril, and the other one was hanging fuckin low on the very edge of the side of my septum.  I looked at him and said "It's way too crooked."  Then Ghiller asked me "You want to do it again?" and I nodded.  He asked me "Do it now? Or in 2 days' time?" and IMMEDIATELY I said "NOW" so he removed the barbell and warned me that this time he couldn't use the numbing spray.  I was like "uhm...... ok I guess" while holding a piece of tissue to my bleeding septum.
When the bleeding stopped, we gave it another try.  He said "OK, I'm gonig to do it.  Don't move" and I just grabbed my trousers, squeezed the shit out of them, and went "oooooouuuuuuuccccchhhhhhhhh" as the needle went through.  He then said "Painful eh? Sorry I couldn't make it less painful than this... Ok now it's straight"  and I felt relieved.I got up and went to look in the mirror, more tears streaming down my face, but In could see it still was crooked, although much less than before.  I told him "But.. it's still crooked!!" and he said "I know but as it heals it'll straighten itself out." I went "Are you sure? If you're sure I'll leave it like this..." and he said he's sure. So I left it like that.  I spent 2 days feeling heartbroken, with a huge heartache feeling going on.  I couldn't bear looking in the mirror cos I felt betrayed and unbalanced.  I had the dinner of a friend to celebrate his birthday, but I wouldn't appear in any photos cos I felt horrible.
I changed jewellery twice while it was still healing, hoping that it would help give the piercing a whole new 'shape' - first to septum retainers which Ghiller gave me for free, then to the BCR I used to wear instead of my labret stud.  Eventually I bought a clear acrylic straight barbell which has UV reactive balls, and I realised that it did straighten itself out more or less, although it is still crooked, but all it takes is me arranging the barbell every now and then to make it look straight.

Reason -  The main reason behind this piercing is that I had to take out my 2nd ear piercing from my left ear, so I needed something to balance me off and make me feel like I never had to remove that one... However i didn't manage to obtain that since my piercing came out crooked. Bleh.  I always wished to get my septum done, so this was the perfect opportunity.
