horace walpole (1717 to 1797) - "creator of the gothic tale"
first published in 1764, "the castle of otranto" is the first tale in the literary genre known as gothic. its components of secret corridors, curses, thunderstorms, unusual passionate emotions, and supernatural occurences have laid the groundwork for all subsequent writers including e.a. poe and henry james. the story is that of manfred, prince of otranto, a man who is forced to deal with a very strange series of events which begin with the death of his only son by way of a gigantic knight helmet which falls from the heavens and crushes him on his wedding day. his tenants believe that this death is the beginning of the fulfillment of an ancient prophecy which states: "the castle and lordship of otranto shall pass from the present owner whenever the real owner has grown too large to inhabit it." manfred himself also accepts this as truth. the prince's intention was to pass the lordship over to his son so that he would inherit the curse, but now that his son has died he must find another woman other than his wife to bear him another because she has proven to be unfuitful in her endeavors save for the deceased son. he now sets his sights upon isabella, the daughter of the marquis of vicenza, whom is also the young lady that his son intended to wed, but, much to his dismay, she refuses his proposal. what follows is a macabre unfolding of happenings which include, among other things, a giant phantom knight, a bleeding statue, and a praying skeletal monk. i'm not going to give away anything else, but i will say that if you enjoy exceptional classic writing then you should make this title a must have. as for the author, horace walpole was the son of sir robert walpole, the prime minister of england from 1721 to 1742. he attended kings college, cambridge and following his education there, spent two years in the company of the poet, thomas gray, on a tour of france and italy. he was a member of parliament and, in 1747, purchased the villa which became famous as strawberry hill which, due to its gothic style, could have been the setting for one of his stories. in 1791 he became the fourth earl of oxford. he died, unmarried, in london on march 2, 1797.
julius evola (1898 to 1974) - "following the upward path in the kali yuga"
poet, philosopher, artist, esoterist, political activist, soldier. julius evola was all of these and more, yet his attitude of remaining upright was the dominating factor of his life's work. "the final age - the kali yuga - may be one of terrible destruction, yet those who are able to live and remain upright nevertheless can reach fruits which were hardly attainable for men of other ages." this "warrior" way of life makes it possible to ride on the back of the beast and survive through the belief that it is better to attack than to defend, to stand and proclaim that you are not going to take it anymore than to cower and await the enemy barrage. however, it must be understood that the battle is one of wit not muscle. evola believed strongly in tradition as is evident in his work "revolt against the modern world" (1934). he placed the priestly and warrior castes of hinduism, the kshatriyas, at the top of the aryan cycle and attributed to them a nordic religion of solar worship and masculine values known as mithraism. evola saw the golden age as a time of warriors and their sun god mithras and the silver age as a time of the goddesses of earth and moon and their priests and priestesses. as for his opinion on the origin of the aryan, he, like many others, placed our primeval dwelling in the cold harshness of the arctic. he stated: " at any rate, it was only at a certain moment that ice and eternal night descended on the polar region. then, with the enforced immigration from that seat, the first cycle closed and the second opened, initiating the second great era, the atlantean cycle." the first great immigration saw its groups settling in north america and the northern regions of the eurasian continent while the second saw its groups settling in the atlantic region, founding there a "nordic - atlantic" civilization on the lost continent of atlantis. in the eyes of evola, the atlanteans eventually became polluted with the degenerative elements of the lemurians, whose distant descendants live on in today's non-white races. the cults of the moon and the earth were born from this demonic union and would forever remain the enemies of the original cult of mithras which was preserved by the nordics who never forgot the importance of the sun due to the spiritual liberation that their ancestors received from it during their initial habitation of the north. evola's hatred of the modern world and his involvement with fascism and national socialism has caused him to be seen as an enemy to some and an inspiration to others. he approved of mussolini's attempts to revive the glory of ancient rome as he saw the warrior mentality of that time to be of much importance to the history of the aryans. in 1938 he was given a tour of the ss castles and praised germany's spirituality which he hoped would spread to the whole of europe and put an end to decadence. he was crippled by a bomb blast received in the russian attack on vienna in 1945 and died in italy in 1974. in my eyes, baron julius evola remains a true hero and a figure of immense importance in the field of esoterism. hail the new right!
note: for those of you who are having a fit of "political correctness" having read this, i would like to inform you that baron evola was not a fascist or a nazi. he supported many groups, but followed none but himself. as a matter of fact, heinrich himmler and benito mussolini both saw him as a threat. he was banned from speaking in germany and spied on by the fascist party. i suggest reading "revolt against the modern world" for a more in-depth examination of his beliefs. believe me, you will be surprised.
