Fokker Dr.1's of Jasta 11 in Spring of 1918
The first batch of 6 Dr.1's
arrived at the front during mid-October of 1917. The production Fokker Dr.1 was of mixed
wood and metal construction. The wings had a wooden box spars and compressed plywood ribs
which were internally braced with wire. The wing leading edge was covered with plywood,
with the remainder of the wing being fabric covered with a wire feathered trailing edge.
The wings had no external bracing wires, except for the two cross-wires between the steel
tube inverted V cabane struts. The top wing was fitted with balanced ailerons which
extended past the wing tips. The ailerons were made of steel tubing covered with doped
fabric.
The middle wing had two cut outs on both sides of the fuselage to improve the pilot's
downward vies. The interplane struts were of wooden construction with metal attachments
points. The rudder and tail plane was fixed to the fuselage top frame and the elevators
were internally balanced.
The fuselage was of welded steel tube construction, braced internally by diagonal bracing
wires. It was fabric covered except for two triangular plywood fillets that ran from the
engine cowling to a point just behind the cockpit. The fillet was installed to blend the
round cowling into the box constructed fuselage and improve the aircraft streamlining. The
engine cowling fully enclosed the engine to a point just below the propeller hub and had
two circular ventilation holes above and on either side of the propeller hub.
