The following family legend was related over Christmas 2000, by the Great-grandnephew to Sosthene Sevigne, Jesse Breaux of Eunice, Lousiana and is as follows:

Related by my father who was 94 years old at the time. Sosthene was with his regiment near Lake Dauterive in Loreauville, La. and someone shouted the yankees are coming. All the soldiers went into the woods and Sosthene found an old plank of wood, which he place in a tree. He slept on this plank that night and the next day, high water was everywhere and he had laryngitis, the soldiers were in small boats looking for Sosthene. They found him perched on the plank in a tree. They took him home and fed him broth and he gained strength and was sent to Kentucky [unsure if Kentucky correct location? According to Confederate Pension Application Records #233, Allowed on June 16, 1914, filed with the State of Louisiana, Sosthene was wounded, and lost the sight in the right eye at the Battle of Mansfield. jlr], where they were in combat.

He had been wounded and was behind a large tree stump. A fellow soldier came by and told him to move and he told the soldier he was wounded. The soldier pulled his sword out and was about to cut his head off and an enemy bullet struck the soldier dead.

This story was told to me by my father. Sosthene was an uncle to Dad.

Civilian Data: (12 December 2001) Jules S. Broussard was born in 1840. He was married to Miss Emelie CORMIER. It is not stated as to the number of children born of this union. However, one of their children, Adelbert Broussard was the Great grandfather of the contributor, Mr. Bill Diaz. One of Adelbert's daughters was Odillia Mary BROUSSARD who was the Grandmother to Mr. Bill Diaz. As it turns out Leo Pierre Champagne and Jules S. Broussard -- both of Bill's Great great Grandfathers served in the same Company in the 18th Louisiana Infantry Regiment. Leo Pierre's Grandson Dudley Pierre Champagne, married Jules S. Broussard's Grand daughter, Odillia Mary Broussard. They had 3 children from this marriage, one of which is Bill's Mother -- Nancy M. Champagne. A real twist of fate. Jules S. passed away in 1916 and is laid to rest at the St. Bernard Catholic Church Cemetery [N. Main St and St. Bernard Drive] in Breaux Bridge, Louisiana. According to the records located at the Archives in Baton Rouge, there is an application for Confederate Pension benefits filed on behalf of both Jules S. and his widow Emelie CORMIER Broussard. Many thanks are extended to Mr. Bill Diaz on behalf of the 18th Louisiana Infantry Regiment for his excellent contribution to the history of this Louisiana historical military unit.

Taking the family line a step farther, the second child born to the union of Leo Pierre and Arthemise, Lionel Charles [the contributors Great Grandfather] had four children, one of which was Dudley Pierre Champagne [Grandfather to the contributor], 1 child with first wife, 3 children with second wife, Second wife was Odillia BROUSSARD [Grandmother to contributor] who was also the Grand daughter to Jules S. It is of our understanding that the Champagne family also possesses a photograph of Leo Pierre taken in his uniform during the Civil War. Should you care to view the image of Leo Pierre Champagne, click on the link listed below. We wish to thank Mr. Bill Diaz for his most gracious contribution to the history of the 18th Louisiana Infantry Regiment with the information supplied in this family history along with the excellent image located in our photo album.

Additional comments: His tomb in Abbeville has a C.S.A. headstone, listing the La. 18th as his outfit. A check of the Pension Application Records at the Archives in Baton Rouge lists an application on behalf of Eliza Bernard LeBlanc. We have seen a story about the 18th as follows: when the commanding general first saw the Cajun troops, he questioned his officers about the Cajuns' dirty uniforms, funny music, and odd foods. After a few battles, where they kicked some Yankee butt, the general told his officers to let the Cajuns have their food and music - just be sure they were in the front line for the next battle. Great story!
