Furlough expires Dec. 31, [p.668] urgent business. Returned Dec. 31, after the Muster Roll was made out and mustered by the Col. (Jan. 3rd, 1862...Camp Benjamin, “A few days after our arrival the regiment was increased by the addition of the Orleans Cadates, commanded by Capt. Joseph Collins, which became the senior company of the regiment, and also by the Opelousas Volunteers, commanded by Capt. Additional Information: (27 November 2001) Shortly after the commencement of hostilities, Capt. Louis Lastrapes raised a company of volunteers known as the Opelousas Volunteers and was elected its captain. A sister company, known as the St. Landry Volunteers, had been raised by Capt. Henry L. Garland, who was elected its captain. When various Louisiana regiments were organized at Camp Moore in 1861, these companies became Co. K and Co. B, respectively, of the 18th La. Regt. Capt. Lastrapes was killed and Capt. Garland seriously wounded on April 6, 1862 at Shiloh. They were first cousins and former law partners in Opelousas. Adolphe Lestrapes, Pvt., Co. B., is the brother of Capt. Louis Lastrapes. The submitter has a contemporary photograph of Capt. Louis Lastrapes in uniform. A similar photograph of Capt. Henry L. Garland in uniform is believed to be located in the Lafayette Museum.

Civilian Data: (18 January 2001) Judge Arthur F. Simon was born on 15 March 1841 in New Orleans. His parents were Edward and Eugenie (Zerban) Simon. Edward Simon came to Louisiana at age 18 from Belgium. Arthur was married twice (1865 to Marie Dejean and after 1879 to Mathilda Dejean, sister of Marie) and had five children from his first marriage. He practiced law in the Opelousas area and was a successful planter. He survived the war and passed away on February 21, 1919 and is laid to rest at the Old St. Landry Catholic Church Cemetery, Union St. in Opelousas. Additional Information (1 August 2002): In 1879 John Jacob opened a mercantile business (an image of the business and customers can be seen in the 18th Louisiana Photo Album and Scrapbook). He owned twenty-five hundred acres of land, which he cultivated in cotton and corn. Mr. Abshire was a successful business man. He was married in September, 1865, to Beizire BROUSSARD. They were the parents of four children, three of whom survived, to&emdash;wit: Joseph T., Olita and John Allison. The other died in infancy. There is an application for Confederate Pension Benefits filed on behalf of his widow on file at the Archives in Baton Rouge.

Civilian Data: (Updated! 17 January 2001) Don Louis Bouillion was born in Acadia Parish and was married to Josephine Trahan on 13 November 1854. This marriage produced some eleven children of which one child, Marie Adele who was married to Jean Aurelin Royer, Pvt., Co. G., 18th Louisiana. Don Louis enlisted in March, 1862, in Co. B., of the Fournet's Yellow Jacket Battalion (10th Battalion) at St. Martinville. In 1863 he was transferred to Co. K., 18th Louisiana Consolidated Infantry Regiment. Don Louis survived the war, but with the effects of a severe reaction to a vaccine given him for an epidemic of smallpox which had infected the regiment. He, over time, fully recovered from the effects of the vaccine. Later, on 19 November 1913, he applied and received a Louisiana Soldiers' Pension for disability for being crippled. After the war, he resided in the area of Rayne in Acadia Parish Louisiana. A comment by his former company commander attests to Don Louis and his service in the Confederacy: "...Don Louis Bouillon, (word not readable) good and devoted service to the Confederate cause and was a brave soldier as long as he could stand to the last moment. (signed) Major Arthur Simon, Ex Major 18th La. Inf. Batt. Consolidated Reg. Infantry Volunteers, Confederate Army, Alfred Mouton's Brigade..." It is not stated as to when Don Louis died nor is his burial site stated. A check of the Confederate Pension Application Records at the Archives in Baton Rouge indicates that an application for benefits is not on file for either Jean nor his wife Estella..
