The following historic plaque, located in Woolwich Township, was dedicated to him. </div> <bR> <bR> <DIV ALIGN="LEFT"></DIV> <div> <TABLE BORDER="7" CELLPADDING="5" CELLSPACING="3" WIDTH="522" BORDERCOLORLIGHT="#C0C0C0" BORDERCOLORDARK="#808080" FRAME="BOX" RULES="ROWS" ALIGN="LEFT" HSPACE="0" VSPACE="0" BGCOLOR=#FFFFFF > <tR> <tD VALIGN=CENTER HEIGHT= 29 ><NOBR><div> <B>CAPTAIN THOMAS SMITH 1767 - 1850</b></div> </NOBR></tD> </tR> <tR> <tD VALIGN=CENTER HEIGHT= 301 WIDTH="490"><div> Captain Smith, a loyalist from Vermont, came to Upper Canada in the late 18th century.  He settled with his wife Mary Weaver and three of their children at the confluence of the Grand and Conestogo Rivers in 1807.  Their daughter Priscilla, born in 1808, was the first non-native child born in Woolwich Township.  The Smith's two-storey log house provided lodging for the settlers arriving in the area.  From 1835 to 1850 Captain Smith operated the stagecoach that carried mail from Winterbourne to Preston via Berlin. </div> </tD> </tR> <tR> <tD VALIGN=CENTER HEIGHT= 110 WIDTH="490"><div> <B>The Ontario Heritage Foundation, the Woolwich Historical Foundation and the Waterloo Historical Society have sponsored the erection of this plaque.</b></div> </tD> </tR> </TABLE></div> <bR> <bR> <bR> </td> </tr></table></body>
