"One of our favorite things to do in Jacob's Trouble was cover old secular tunes that had a lot of truth in them already, without changing any of the lyrics. It was our theory that music itself was neither Christian nor non-Christian, but rather the perspective from which it was played or listened to. That's how the Monkees' "Door Into Summer" and the Beatles' "Tell Me What You See" ended up on the first record. Eric Clapton's classic "Let It Rain" was to be the next installment in the series and this version was recorded for consideration on KNOCK, BREATHE, SHINE. Everyone was really excited about it until the word came down from the powers that be, "NO MORE COVERS!" However, in traditional J.T. irony, the same forces that said no to this track coerced us into including a cover of Dylan's "I Believe In You" on the CD. (Chorus:)
My life was like a desert flower burning in the sun
Now I know the reason; there is nothing that I lack
"So if you faithfully obey the commands I am giving you today -- to love the LORD your God and to serve him with all your heart and with all your soul -- then I will send rain on your land in its season, both autumn and spring rains, so that you may gather in your grain, new wine and oil." -
Deuteronomy 11:13-14
"... the earth shook, the heavens poured down rain, before God, the One of Sinai, before God, the One of Israel. You gave abundant showers, O God; you refreshed your weary inheritance."
- Psalm 68:8-9
Of all the previously unreleased tracks on this collection, this one is my absolute favorite. This was the closing number in concert for years. The sax solos in the middle and at the end still give me chills."
The rain is falling through the mist of sorrow that surrounds me
The sun could never thaw away the bliss that lays around me
Let it rain, let it rain
Let your love rain down on me
Let it rain, let it rain
Let it rain, rain, rain
Until I found the way to love, it's harder said than done
(Repeat chorus)
If I give my love to you, you'll surely give it back, that's right
Let it rain, let it rain, my Lord
Let Your love rain down on me
Let it rain, let it rain
Let it rain, rain, rain...
