WHAT TO LOOK FOR
How can a landscaper help your situation:
A landscaper is hired by a client to perform a desired job.  This job entails an addition, fix, removal, or maintenence of an existing problem in the yard.  Landscapers specialize in outdoor work.  They exist in order to help a client fill the void that they can not do.  The landscapers are called in to improve a situation one might have in their yard. Many companies have the ability to install plants, planting beds, flowers, shrubs, trees, ponds, patio's, deck's, irrigation, lighting, reataining walls, and much more.

What is the company background:
Was this company recommended to you?  Did you see an advertisement?  Is it a large or small company?  These are all possibilties, but must be considered when evaluating your list of potenetial designers. It is good to have a licensed Landscape architect in the company, or landscape designer.  How much educational backgroud does the company have in this field.  Can the company provide a list of referneces that the client may call for a referral.  Ask to see a portfolio of past work completed and see if it fits your style.

What would you, the client like to see:
Before you say  something beautiful and cheap try to be understanding.  Remenber everybody has to make a living.  Before any contacts are made try and establish a budget of what you can afford.  Hopefully you can spend less than that.  Try and work with a designer to understand his thinking so that you may better appreciate his work.  Let them know of your ideas and what you would like to see in the plan.  Plus it is not a bad idea to try out a few companies to get different perspectives on what can be done with your site.

Is the company reliable:
Check the background of the company before handing over that check.  How long have they been in business.  Has it always been the same location or have they grown into a larger company.  Is the company insured against any possible damage that might occur during construction.  Have they had any prior claims, and if so how many.  Is the company known for finishing a job on time with quality and care or do they just throw it all together. The Better Business Bureau Central Web Server for U.S. and Canada is an excellent way of researching your company.

The contract:
Make sure it is a legal and binding contract in case something goes wrong.  This will protect both the client and the company.  Do you agree to the price and design or sholud there be some changes.  Is the company willing to work with you or is it a struggle to change any of the plans.  Make sure the contract has a list of all work to be complteted as well as all materials to be applied.  Make sure that both parties sign and that it is followed.

SERVICES OFFERED
As mentioned before this industry is largely growing and is adding more capabiliteis everyday.  That is why many companies are trying to control  the market by offering a wide varity of sercies to keep a client more satisfied.  These copanies are beginning to offer more capabilities.  For example, now they will offer a professional design, the installation and the maintenence.  A company that can offer all of these services is more likely to geta job over a competitor qho can only offer 1 to 2 of these.  It means more work on the part of the client in hiring more contractors to get the job done.

Landscape Design:
This is where it all begins, the drawing board, or computer.  The designer has a difficult job and must take many parts of the site into consideration.  A true professional must analyze the proposed site and account for all possible parts to the puzzle.  It is better to have more than one design when proposing a job, so the designer should have more than one idea.  The professionalism of a drawing says a lot about the company. http://www.jbkinc.com/page6.htm

Installation:
This is where the grunt work comes in.  Remember these people are working hard and do not need to be hounded.  Make sure that the designer plays a big part in the installation.  It is better to see him out at the site making sure that everything goes as the plan was drawn.  Plus many times designs must be altered due to un forseen problems and it must be altered.  Many times the foreman is more than capable to fix it but it helps when the designer agrees with the foreman.  Many tools and processes are used to install all parts of the design.  Evaluate the crews knowledge of the job and each one involvemnet in the installation.

Maintenence:
This has to be one of the best attributes any company can offer to you the client.  A good company knows that to keep a good reference they must prove that when they do a job they do it right and that they take pride in it.  They can do this by offering a maintenence contract after the installition is done.  This contract mostly includes mowing the lawn, trimming all new and existing plants and trees, re-mulching beds, along with re-edging.  This is also a good option because the company is already familar with the area and they know the cocept behind the design because they did it.
