There are a couple of enhancements you
can make to improve your logons and reduce the headaches. On your start
screen, open up the My Computer icon and you will see Dial-up Networking
in there. Open that up and then highlight your Internet icon. Don't
open it. Just highlight it. Next is take your cursor up to Connections
and click on that. Go down to settings and click on that and a Dial-up
Networking page will pop up. Next check the redial box. Then put a zero
in the box that says Between. This will configure your auto-redial. Click
OK and now with the Internet icon still highlighted, move the cursor over
to File, click on properties and another page with your Internet icon should
pop up. On it should read 'Connect using' near the bottom. Below that will
have a pair of buttons; one configure, one Server Type. Click on the Configure
button and another page will pop up with the name for your modem at the
top. At the bottom where it says maximum speed, put 115200 & make sure
the box where it says only connect at this speed is NOT checked.
Go back to the top and click on the button 'Connection' where another page
pops up. Near the bottom of that page is a button called Advanced. Click
on Advanced, & a page comes up. Near the bottom it says Extra settings.
Inside that space type this 'exact' string. "AT&F1&K3". At the
top make sure that Hardware is checked and click on OK until you close
all of your folders, then re-start your computer. Next, set the Com
port buffer in your configeration settings. To increase modem performance
whenconnecting to the Internet with Win95 . . . . . :
1. Disable compression on your modem settings
2. Open the sysedit file in Start/ Run-
(type in sysedit and hit return)
3. Under the 386Enh section in Sys.ini
put: COMxBuffer=1024
(where x is the Comport #); you can disable
error correction by un-checking that box under the modem settings in Modem
properties/ Connection/ Advanced(follow that order).We have been able to
boost a 28.8k connection to an average of 3.3k a second on most URLs. In
Windows 95, the speed of your modem may seem not to work, but the true
fact is the baud rate for your COM Port doesnt allow you to reach top-speed.
To improve your ports speed, go to “ Control Panel /System /Communication
Ports , then double-click the port your modems in, then click the Properties
tab and set the Port Speed to 115200 BPS. Vast Improvements now.
