Hugh Kelso’s will, youngest son of John and Polly Kelso, written in 1809, probated in 1813, will Book No 3, page 539

In The name of God, Amen

I, Hugh Kelso of the County of Rockbridge in the State of Virginia, being of sound mind and memory, but considering the mortality of my body and that is appointed for all men once to die, do make and ordain this as my last will and testament in the manner and form following viz, I will and order that all my debts be paid and all debts due me collected by my Executors (hereafter mentioned) and as touching what worldly estate it hath pleased God to bless me with , I will dispose in the following manner:

Item, I bequeath unto Mary my well beloved wife the plantaion I now live on with my slaves Jim and Fanny, my stock and farming utensilsand kitchen furniture during her natural life and after my said wife is deceased, I bequeath the same unto my son Walker Kelso to him, his heirs and assigns.

Item, I also bequeath unto my said wife my beds with their furniture and the household and cupboard furniture and to be at her disposal.

Item I bequeath unto my son Joseph Kelso the plantation that he now lives on in the calf pasture to him, his heirs and assigns.

Item I bequeath unto my son William Kelso the Negro boy named Lewas and now in his possesion.

Item I bequeath unto my sons James, Charles, Hugh and John the sums of one dollar each and the like sum to each of my daughters, Peggy Walker, Betsy Culton, and Kitty Walker- they having received their part before this date.

Item I bequeath unto my son Walker Kelso two small surveys of Mountain land that I have between the place that I now live on and the North mountain to him, his heirs and assigns, also my still and vessels.

I do hereby constitute and appoint John Walker and Hugh Stuart sole executors of this my last will and testament and do revoke and disannul all other wills and testaments by me hereto made declaring and establishing this to be my last will and testament. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and affixed my seal this twenty-first day of September in the year of our Lord one thousand and eight hundred nine.

The last will and testament of Hugh Kelso was produced in court by the Exors therein named and proved by Andrew Finley and continued for furthur proof
