Hugh Alexander Kelso was the son of James Balch Kelso (son of Alexander Kelso, Jr.) and Malvina Hudiburgh. He was born 6 Dec 1829 in Morgantown, Morgan County, Indiana. He died 8 Jul 1917 in Paxton, Ford County, Illinois. His obituary follows:
Obituary of H. A. Kelso, found in "Kelso correspondence", Vol V, Summer 1992, No. 4. Dr. H.A. Kelso Dies Sunday Morning (newspaper -- Paxton, IL Record) " Dr. H.A. Kelso, one of the oldest residents of our city, passed away at 6 o'clock Sunday morning after a lingering illness from a complication of diseases. Deceased was 87 years of age. Dr. Kelso was a medical practitioner of Paxton since the early history of the city, having located here after the close of the Civil War. He served all through the Civil War as a surgeon for the Union army and rendered aid to his country where the fighting was thickest and the danger was greatest. He is probably one of the best known men in this section of the country, for when he took up the practice of medicine here there were but few doctors and he was called for miles around when services of this natures were needed. It has been quite a number of years since the deceased had been actively engaged in the practice of his profession, owing to the infirmities of age. " Besides the widow he leaves two sons to mourn his loss. They are Prof. Hugh A. Kelso of Chicago and Dr. Elmer L. Kelso of this city. "All join with the Record in extending sympathy to the bereaved ones."
