Lewis Brantley

b. abt 1760  d. abt 1825

had children with Sarah Howard

Information on Lewis and Sarah Howard was taken from the Nash county census and other documents.  We do know that Lewis and Sarah were living together because in 1810, they were charged with fornication and living in a state of cohabitation.  Click here to see copy of original charges.

There is no record of a marriage between Lewis Brantley and Sarah Howard, but apparently they had several children.  Some are all reported in the census as Pollie/y/Mary Howard or Mary/Pollie/y Brantley and Elizabeth/Betsey Howard/Brantley.  They are seen in the census in 1790, 1800 and 1820.   Sarah Howard has been reported to have been an Indian, likely Nasemond and she was dead by 1820.   It is also possible/likely that Thomas Brantley and Dinah Brantley were Lewis and Sarah's children

This line has been difficult to follow as the name changes from Howard to Brantley frequently.

Additional research on the descendants of Lewis Brantley and Sarah Howard by Europe Farmer is available by clicking here.

Five children seen with Pollie/y Howard in the 1860 census are:

1. Burt/Bert Brantley 1842-1915  (Father reported to be Jacob Colston)

2.  William M. Brantley 1845-1925

3. Noah/Noel Brantley 1848- 1926

4. John Brantley 1849-1924

5. Dilsey/Delphia Brantley 1853-1926.  (Her marriage certificate to William Bailey lists Pollie Brantley as her mother with a line where father would be listed)

All of her children had different fathers.

Several of Pollie/y Brantley's descendants are buried in a cemetery near Sandy Level crossroads and Green Pond in Nash county, NC.
