Music & Movement Therapy

Music Therapy has proven to be a remarkably effective way of assisting individuals with special needs in musical and non-musical areas. Music therapy clinically applies the diverse elements in the experience of music to help clients improve, restore or maintain health.

Music Therapists assess clients' needs through musical responses, and then design music sessions for individuals and groups based on these assessments. Sessions may include Nordoff-Robbins clinical improvisation, recreating music, listening to live or recorded selections, composing, lyric analysis, music and imagery, performance, or learning specific skills through music.

Dance/Movement Therapy uses elements of dance, yoga and creative movement to foster self-expression, communication, awareness and integration of the mind, body and spirit. Movement, posture, gesture, breath and rhythm are all expressions of the body which may be used as alternatives to traditional verbal therapy.

These therapies are provided at the Music Center as well as at psychiatric hospitals, rehabilitative facilities, medical hospitals, school settings, early intervention programs, community health centers, senior centers and group homes throughout the community. Services are available to individuals of all ages with a variety of conditions including autism, communication disorders, medical illness, trauma, physical disabilities, sensorimotor impairments, psychiatric disorders, emotional or behavioral problems, addiction, developmental disabilities, learning disabilities, and aging.

Therapists also provide continuing education classes and supervision for the professional clinician who is practicing in the field. These include private music lessons on piano, voice and guitar geared toward clinical work, as well as classes on stress reduciton, clinical improvisation and drumming.
