Eponine

In the novel, Eponine is referred to as a "rose in misery." I think that is a good characterization of Eponine. Had the situation been different, who knows what her life would have been like? Poverty had changed what had been a pretty little girl into an undernourished, sickly young woman about whom only the traces of beauty lurked. She loved Marius with a selfish love, the only kind she knew. And when she died, she felt at peace, because she was being released from her misery.

The skies begin to clear, and I'm at rest. (Characters)
