Javert

Javert is often seen as the villain of the musical: the relentless and merciless officer of the law that hunts down Valjean to the end of his days. But really, he's only doing what he believes to be right. Like most "villains," he deeply believes he is doing the right thing. He, because he refuses to accept any middle ground between the righteous man and the criminal, is thrown off balance by Valjean's story of reform. Unable to cope with the sudden shattering of everything he ever felt to be true, he drowns himself in the river Seine.

You're looking at Philip Quast, who happens to be my favorite Javert. (Sorry, Terrence Mann fans, but I do like Quast's interpretation better.) Click on the picture and listen to him sing "Stars" from the Tenth Anniversary Concert recording.
