Compaq Ipaq Pocket PC Is Unveiled

By Jeremy Weisser,

Well it was bound to happen sooner or later, the first pictures of the new Compaq Ipaq Pocket PC have emerged.

The pictures show two different variations of the Ipaq but as of now they remain completely unofficial. The pictures show that Compaq has worked extremely hard to design a very attractive device.

All of the pictures have subtle differences but they all have their strong points. The pictures are very convincing but the reported specs are a little hard to believe, especially considering Compaq's history. Supposedly the new device will be powered by a 206 MHz Strong ARM processor, hard to believe considering the fact that the Strong ARM processor has not been implemented in any Pocket Windows CE device to date. Also 206 MHz seems a little much for a Compaq device, after all the Aero 1530 which was released late last year only ran at 70 MHz. The Compaq Aero 8000 series only runs at 128 MHz so it seems highly unlikely that a Pocket PC would outmuscle a HPC Pro device.

The rest of the devices specs are a little more reasonable. Besides the 206 MHz processor the Ipaq contains 32MB of RAM and 16MB of Flash ROM.

We will have to wait until April 19th for the Pocket PC's official launch but from what we have seen so far the future of the Pocket PC and of Windows CE looks extremely bright.
