Chapter 6
Joshua Resch
"Ralph and Simon picked him up unhandily and carried him" (Golding, 95). Ralph is sharing hardships now. He is
showing that he is not above his own laws but obeys showing humility. A servant
leader is a respective leader. This shows that his dad has probably shown him
how to lead people because it is not a common practice to help those who are below you in rank. It is a specific practice used by good true leaders. "Ralph
was dreaming. He had fallen asleep after what seemed hours of tossing and turning
noisily among the dry leaves. Even the sounds of nightmare from the other shelters
no longer reached him" (Golding, 98). This
is making me picture that he is no longer a part of their punishments. I believe
that this is showing that since he told them what to do, it nullifies him from any punishments entitled to the tribe. Their nightmares dont reach him because they are no longer his responsibility. "Sam n Eric. Call them to an assembly. Quietly. Go on." (Ralph, 99). He is treating them with due respect. I also think that this is a show of trust and of shared power. Earlier,
he alone could call the tribe to assembly. Now he has given the power to Sam
and Eric. This may be pictured as loosing power to some but in the long run;
the respect and confidents of Sam and Eric will be worth it. He is also going
to use this in the future to his advantage (I think)! "Ralph stood up and walked
for the sake of dignity" (Golding, 99).
In the beginning the only reason he had power was the conk. Now he is
giving them better reasons to follow him. He has brought DIGNITY to his role as supreme leader of the islanders tribe. He
has really begun a transformation from a bad, pathetic, disgraceful leader to a mighty and fabulous leader. He has come along by a lot. He can also now demand respect
with reason.
