Chapter 5
"Ralph chose the firm strip as a path because
he needed to think" (Golding, 76). I think that this shows that Ralph may be
autistic because he keeps to him self, A recluse if you will, he chooses to constantly leave the crowd and ponder things all
by him self. It shows that he is uncomfortable about others being able to see
his weakness. He probably learned from his father (who is in the NAVY) that leaders
are supposed to not show emotions that they are perfectly over their emotions. So
from what he has been taught he, the leader, should be a shining example for the tribe.
"There must be no mistake about this assembly, no chasing imaginary" (Golding, 76).
He is deep in thought. This is showing that he has a master plan. A plan that will change every thing. He
knew that he has but one more chance to show his leadership to the tribe; his last chance to prove to the entire tribe he
deserved leadership. Not just to him self, but to his dad as well. "He lost his self in a maze of thoughts that were rendered vague by his lack of words to express them"
(Golding, 76). He is not just thinking about what he is about to say, but is
stressing out about how the islanders are going to take it. He knows that he
is desperately loosing their respect. He was an absolute power in the beginning
but know he is nothing in the eyes of the tribe. "Ralph sat he faced the island
but to the boys was a darkish figure" (Golding, 77).
This is showing that his fear is already coming true. His power is already
gone. They see him as a dark figure which depicts the soulless ness of nothingness. He is nothing but another body on the island instead as a leader who should be respected. "He paused, feeling for his next point." (Golding,
81). He is now trying to reclaim is power over the tribe here. Although he knows what to do he is baffled on what to say. The
important thing is that he is doing the right thing. He does not have much power
any more. This show that he is a good person though. He is doing the best things for the tribe.
